As most of you know due to the somewhat recent HDD price drops and the continuous increase in storage capacity needs lately we've been focusing on storage related reviews from internal HDDs (consumer and enterprise grade) and up to external HDDs (both 3.5" and 2.5". However it's important that don't lose sight of what's really important and that is to cover all our readers out there with our reviews and so although we've tested quite a few external 2.5" drives lately most of them were large capacity ones with rugged enclosures. Still although having an external HDD with a rugged housing is never a bad thing because of their size and design it's somewhat difficult to carry them around in your back pocket. Well luckily Toshiba has that covered with their brand new STOR.E SLIM 500GB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive.

Today I am going to be looking at a product from a manufacturer that whilst they are a household name is less well known for their involvement in the computer hardware industry. The manufacturer is Toshiba and the product is one of their Store Steel external hard drives, this one in particular is 320GB.

Just over two years ago there were only five companies involved in Solid State Drive technology, and as of January 2010 there are nearly 140 names in the business. In this article Benchmark Reviews inspects the Toshiba T6UG1XBG Solid State Drive controller, which is used in the third-generation Kingston SSDNow V+ SNV325. The Toshiba T6UG1XBG SSD controller is a 43nm part, with a maximum rated read speed of 230MBps and write-to performance peaking at 180MBps.

In the continuous activity test we see the strong side of the Toshiba SSD. When the SSD is in constant use for a longer period of time, the performance barely dips like it does for most other SSDs. This is of less importance for consumers, but for servers this is an advantage.

All Solid State Drives are not created equal because not everyone wants one for the same purpose/use. That's what a good friend of mine in the SSD industry told me a couple of years back and to date he has yet to be proven wrong by anyone including myself. Of course the same reasoning applies for pretty much everything in life from coffee makers, smartphones, computer peripherals and TV screens up to cars and entire houses so although not something new it is what it is. Now just over a week ago we tested the latest SSD model by Kingston the SSDNow V300 which carried Toshiba's brand new 19nm toggle NAND Flash Modules. As it is quite natural however Toshiba had already announced their own SSD featuring the same 19nm toggle NAND Flash Modules back in early summer and today we will be taking a look at the 512GB variant the THNSNF512GCSS.

We've had a look at a few different mSATA drives lately and coincidentally, all have been SandForce SF-2281 based. Now we have a turn at Transcends latest line of mSATA drives which also feature the SF-2281 controller. This sets up a nice comparison for us to perform our evaluation so have a look at what we found in our latest storage review.

By plugging in the Transcend RDF8 USB 3.0 Memory Card Reader into one of the available USB 3.0 ports on the ASUS UX31A we found performance increased nicely. The sequential read and write speeds jumped up to 81MB/s and 45MB/s, respectively. Speed aside it also supports other memory card formats that we previously couldn't do, so you get more than just a speed boost!
