Have you ever woken up in the morning and wished for a breakfast in bed? I am certain a few of you individuals have experienced this craving, and let me be the first to tell you that the Thermaltake Max 5G is exactly that craving taunter. Now, many of you are probably wondering what I am trying to get at here, so let me clarify -- bacon. Simply put, this hard drive enclosure smells like bacon in my opinion. Thermaltake must have some kind of telekinesis power, because who would make a HDD enclosure that smells like bacon? Let us not get too carried away with the "bacony" goodness of the Max 5G. Many would have expected this "meaty" enclosure to make a lot of noise, considering it incorporates two fans. With two fans, one would at least expect to hear much of the fan noise. However, after turning it on for quite some time, it was actually not too bad. Continuing on with my daily chores, it almost made me think the fans were not even on, but the stylish blue LEDs convinced me otherwise. I am not sure what is with all the blue LED fans that manufactures keep using on almost all the electronics I use, but it is almost getting to the point where my computer is now a glowing blue monster in the middle of the night. Thermaltake sure seems to be messing around my head when it comes to this enclosure. Read on to find out why!
USB 3.0 has a lot of promise for devices that need large amounts of bandwidth. So far we've only been given a glimpse of what the specification has to offer. The big marketing claim for USB 3.0 has always been 'up to 10x USB 2.0 speeds', but in our real world testing we've only been able to achieve around 200MB/s. With USB 2.0 topping out at around 35MB/s on a good day, 10x USB 2.0 has yet to be achieved. There are several reasons for this, but what it really comes down to is PCIe bandwidth and what current chipsets are able to make available after all those video cards, SATA, eSATA and USB ports take up. On top of the bandwidth limitations is the current crop of USB 3.0 controller and bridge chips. Many do not offer the 10x bandwidth we have been promised.

The dual 80mm fans help cooling the HDD while it is on, so we can obtain similar temperatures as we would have installed the drive inside a well ventilated computer case.

I'm finding it difficult to find anything I would offer up as a suggestion for the Thermaltake Max 5G USB drive enclosure. It supports the latest version of USB while being backwards compatible to previous generations, it provides active cooling with dual 80mm LED fans, it has an integrated support stand, and it has an easy way to turn off the fan's LEDs.
The Thermaltake MAX-1542 is a great addition to any PC that needs ease of access for hot drive swaps, data portability with the security of locking your drives in the case or in a safe. We noticed no caveats and the price is good to boot.

Hard drive enclosures can be play an important role in our computer centric lives, they’re great for taking stuff with you. You can get them in big and small sizes and they certainly come in all shapes and designs. Today for review I’ve got the latest enclosure from Thermaltake called the Max5G that uses USB 3.0 so you get the best performance. The Max5G also features two 80mm cooling fans and it looks good too.
I am not entirely sure of the origins of the word, but according to Urban Dictionary. a ricer is one who "...makes unnecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice"
to make it (mostly make it look) faster." Now first off, I just want to make the statement that not everything imported has to do with rice. Secondly, let me clear a few things for you ladies and gents. No, I do not own a riced up car; and no, I do not go around Chinatown rolling in first gear flaunting my excessively large exhaust. So what does today's review on a simple 3.5" HDD enclosure have anything to do with ricers? Well, in the past year or so, Thermaltake released a new HDD enclosure in the Silver River series, aptly called the Silver River II. What is different about this enclosure compared to its predecessor, the Silver River DUO? Well, absolutely nothing -- or at least it seems like it. It appears that what the Silver River II 3.5" offers to users that is different from the older versions would be a giant cosmetic upgrade. Interested? That will have to depend on you. Even though in terms of performance and functionality, the newer Silver River II may at first be 'questionable', it may very well be worth your money and time. You may loathe the new and improved design, but I am here to tell you this enclosure may have more to offer than its sweet and sleek lines. It took four years for Thermaltake to take the Silver River to a new evolution, and as a company notorious for its amazing cooling capabilities, we have already set high standards for this enclosure. This time around, the enclosure boasts of the spectacular and sleek-looking silver lines gracing the riced futuristic designs as well as the most impressive "diamond-cut" finish. Now as 100% of you intelligent people would know, diamonds are a woman's best friend; clearly, Thermaltake wants the enthusiast population to get in on the action (Note that in order to dodge the 'sexist' bullet, I created my own sex: Enthusiast). I mean, the Silver River II allows you to have both "Silver" and "Diamonds" -- kidding. So, is this enclosure good enough to being your HDD's new set of clothes? Or, will it be just another riced up product? Either way, you will have to read on to find out!
