Crucial's m4 is one of the best-selling SSDs in the world thanks to its high performance and low price. Can Crucial hit the same high sales numbers with the new m4 mSATA SSD?

The performance of the Barracuda 7200.14 is simply outstanding. It belongs to the fastest 7200rpm hard drives that are currently available. Not only that, the disk is also more affordable than the high-end 7200rpm 2TB drives from other brands.

Crucial lists the capabilities of V4 256GB SATA II SSD as being able to reach read speeds of up to 230MB/s and writes up to 190MB/s. In two out of three synthetic benchmarks, we saw these specifications exceeded with the max reads hitting a hair under 280MB/s and writes just under 240MB/s. Obviously, this is best case performance scenarios but it gives a clear indication of what the drives are capable of although the lesser capacity versions will return lower results. Being a value oriented drive, we feel like the performance is very solid...

Few companies are as established as VisionTek, but can a great company name built on good support, quality and product availability make up for an SSD with an inflated cost?

The Thermaltake MAX-1542 is a great addition to any PC that needs ease of access for hot drive swaps, data portability with the security of locking your drives in the case or in a safe. We noticed no caveats and the price is good to boot.

The Samsung SSD 840 Pro is by far the fastest SSD currently around- faster than the OCZ Vertex 4, faster than the Corsair Neutron GTX and faster than the Plextor M5 Pro. Samsung also has a proven track record in terms of reliability and quality, as the Samsung 830 series had very few known issues. History is of course not a guarantee for future success, but there is no reason to think that the new 840 Pro series will be any less dependable.

It is difficult to position the new 840 series. It's not an entry-level product in terms of price, if you're looking for something affordable you're still better off with the Samsung 830. The 840 also isn't a high-end SSD, models such the Plextor M5 Pro, Corsair Neutron GTX and Samsung 840 Pro are much faster and don't have the potential disadvantage of the TLC chips during intensive use. It's not mid-range either, SSDs like the Corsair Neutron 240 GB or the OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB are both faster and cheaper. In other words, the 840 series will become interesting only when the price goes down quite a bit, lower than the current level of the 830.
