Today we are looking at the latest edition the the Thermaltake BlacX series of hard drive docks. This module is equipped with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface and claims to be the best hard drive docking station yet from Thermaltake. Read on to see if it can reach that goal since it can run both 2.5” & 3.5” SATA I/II/3.0 & Solid-State Drive up to 2 TB.

Even the fastest networks can seem slow when you have to transfer large files from one computer to another computer, and short of physically moving hard drives between computers a network was really the fastest option available. USB3 is destined to change our perceptions regarding the speed, especially when it comes to connected storage.

Thermaltake have tagged this dock with SuperSpeed, but how super is the BlacX' speed against a pure SATA connection?

For our readers in the field of IT, data recovery whether from a dying disk, virus infection, or a dying system is a common occurrence. While slave drive kits work, they can look messy. Thermaltakes solution to this is its line of BlacX vertical docking stations. Benchmark Reviews will be looking at the updated Thermaltake BlacX 5G docking station, which will give users SATA 6Gb/s and SuperSpeed USB-3.0 support allowing for the fastest possible transfer speeds. This review will be evaluating whether the Thermaltake BlacX 5G dock is something every IT department should have or if there are better solutions on the market.

At first glance a lot of people may not appreciate the usefulness of a hard drive dock, but when you have to access a friend or relatives drive to recover data they are a welcome piece of equipment. Thanks to the latest update to Thermaltake’s BlacX line, the BlacX 5G now utilizes USB 3.0 making it not only handy but fast as well.

Ah, good old USB 3.0 is popping up more and more, I think it’s finally coming into its own?! Ok, it hasn’t been that widely accepted yet, but it’s slowly getting there. Today for review I’ve got a new product from Thermaltake for USB 3.0, it’s the BlacX 5g which is a hard drive dock. This dock can use both 3.5” or 2.5” hard drives and SSDs. Included with the dock are two rubber hard drive protectors as well to help protect your drives in transport or when not in use.

Desktop docks are nothing new. We first looked at the Thermaltake BlacX two years ago and love the idea of being able to use raw HDDs without opening our computer cases. If you are someone like me with several drives sitting around, the idea is brilliant. The early models had a few shortfalls, though; mainly their reliance on the aging USB 2.0 protocol and placing the power button on the back of the dock. The later issue was due to the urge to save money at the R&D level. With the button at the back you had to reach around the dock which was kind of a pain in the butt.

The latest external dual docking station by Thermaltake called the BlacX Duet 5G may not carry special features such as RAID0-1 modes but it does serve its purpose by offering blazing fast transfer speeds via USB 3.0 connectivity.
