We've looked at several USB 3.0 drive enclosures and realize the enclosures are not the bottleneck limiting transfer speeds to around 200MB/s. As it stands right now, the promised USB 3.0 bandwidth claim of 5Gbps is a sham since the bandwidth from the USB 3.0 controller is limited at the motherboard level. Until we get more PCIe bandwidth dedicated to USB 3.0 we are stuck at around 200MB/s. USB 3.0 will one day offer over 600 MB/s, but until things change at the motherboard level we aren't going to see anything near that mark.

The Patriot Memory Extreme Performance Xporter XT Rage is a USB Flash Drive featuring an innovative Quad Channel configuration; data is intelligently managed and transferred simultaneously to 4 NAND chips resulting in vastly enhanced performance, mostly reflected in the write speeds. The Flash Drive comes in 8, 16, 32, 64Gb flavours.

'My SSD Is Faster than Your HDD' just doesn't seem to fit the part when we are speaking of the OCZ RevoDrive x2 PCIe SSD. Anytime you consider a product that is controlled by four (4) SandForce SF-1200 series controllers, prepare to be amazed. The RevoDrive x2 should knock your socks off with advertised specs of 740MB/s read and 690MB/s write and 4k random write of 100, 000 IOPS.

In just over a year we’ve gone from the QNAP TS-419 to the QNAP TS-419P+ with a TS-419P in the middle. The performance of each device has gradually improved. The QNAP TS-419U which I previously reviewed was aimed at the corporate market as it came in a rackmount design. However, the QNAP TS-419P+ is most definitely targeted at the home market. It doesn’t quite pack the same punch as the small business and corporate devices with their Intel ATOM processors, 1GB RAM and 512MB flash memory but it has all the same software features to give it that extra edge over the competition. The icing on top of the cake would be the support offered by QNAP. The forums and Wiki guide gives you more knowledge than you ever need. If you have a problem, there’s an answer.

The Kingston SSDNow V100 boasting speeds of up to 250Mb/s, we put it to the test to see if this drive can truly keep up with the claims of its manufacturer. Come see the results!

Since the inception of the line, the Vertex name has been synonymous with performance and helped propel OCZ to a prominent position in the SSD market. Not resting on their laurels, OCZ has jumped out in front again with the Vertex 3 to be the first to launch a line featuring the latest SandForce controllers paired with a SATA III 6Gbps interface and 25nm NAND, while others ostensibly seem a little more conservative in their speed to market. Just how high has the bar been set? Read on to see.

Today we are taking a look at the Max 5G from Thermaltake. The Max 5G is taking a different approach to the external drive enclosures. Where most others seem to aim at making the enclosure as compact as possible, the Max 5G is adding additional cooling in for good measure. This should have an impact on long-term drive health if warm hard drives concern you. The Max 5G comes with dual 80mm fans and blue LED highlights in addition to its USB 3.0 connectivity.

Since this reviewer started testing components there has been little change in the way we connect external storage devices. USB, primarily 2.0 has been the main connection method with some manufacturers dabbling with eSATA, Firewire and even LAN connectors with varying success. Finally though it looks like we will be moving on from the 30MB/s cap of USB 2.0 as pretty much every device from low cost net tops to high end motherboards now come through our labs with USB 3.0 connectivity.

The Crucial m4 needs little introduction since it is one of the two most anticipated SSDs of 2011. The truth is that most of you are planning on skipping the next handful of pages to get right to the benchmarks. Don't do that! Take everything you've already read about the Micron C400 / Crucial m4 and toss it out of your mind, because mumble - mumble - mumble isn't exactly accurate. Let me explain with swollen tongue.
