I remember the very first USB 3.0 enclosure I tested. The Buffalo unit was more than just the first USB 3.0 external drive I tested; it was the very first review ever written on a USB 3.0 external enclosure where benchmarks were also provided. As you can imagine, I was very excited to review the first USB 3.0 product online, but that excitement quickly went away when I realized I would need to talk about pricing. Last November that 2TB Buffalo DriveStation 2TB cost a whopping 399.99. There just isn’t enough whisky in Lynchburg to dull that pain.

Today for review Seagate has sent me over one of their FreeAgent Go drives, specifically the 500gb version. I’ve taken a look at quite a few Seagate products in the past and I’ve always liked them, the same goes for the one I have today. The FreeAgent Go is small and portable and relatively fast, or as fast as USB 2.0 will get you. It’s a 2.5” drive inside the casing, on that drive you’ll find some very useful software for backups, syncing and even encryption. As a bonus with this drive you’ll get a free copy of Star Trek when you register the drive with Seagate. So read on…

Rules were made to be broken; that whole 55 MPH thing happens to be my favorite. Western Digital had larger aspirations; the kinds that considered milestones. Reaching the 750GB per platter mark is definitely in the milestone category and that is what Western Digital has done here.

The 4k random write thoroughput of the F90 and F180 has now been increased to a thoroughput of up to 50,000 which now matches that of enterprise-level SSDs and this is done through a recent release of SandForce firmware only available in new drives. In fact, we can even say that this firmware equals and sometimes surpasses that of the SF-1500 drive and a little known fact is that the SF-1200 and SF1500 are actually identical processors in hardware composition.
