Asustor hit the market in late 2012 with several models that fit into each of the key NAS categories - today Chris looks at the 4-bay AS-604T unit, and fully puts it through its paces.
Its not very often we see new names coming to market that appear to have such a strong presence about them. Typically it takes quite a period for a new name to be classed as on of the common brands, rather than being left on the sidelines, however there is a new name to the NAS scene that has only taken a couple of years to become more commonly known. Asustor, who have been around for only the last two years, are as some might guess a subsidiary of Asus, one of the leading brands in graphics cards and motherboards.
Taking the expertise in design, innovation and quality that Asus have, Asustor NAS systems are, in their desktop format, designed straight for the home user with clean and stylish looks, a user interface that makes the process of managing a NAS a lot simpler and more intuitive to work with and an app for iOS devices that allows the system to be remotely controlled when a HD TV is connected for its media centre functions.
Being a relatively new player in to the NAS market, Asustor are going to have their work cut out when it comes to taking on the big names such as QNAP and Thecus but with the backing of Asus, they do have a good change of being right up there with the big guns so to speak.
To give an overview of the Asustor range, there are currently eight systems in their product catalogue split into three groups. The first of these groups, aimed at home to power users comprises of a two and four bay system in the AS-3xx series, ideal for budget users who want a system to get them up and going. Next up from this is the power to business group, also known as the AS-6xx series (of which the system we’re looking at today is part of) and this comprises of four systems ranging from two to eight bays. The last group is for the SMB market and here lies two rack mount NAS, one four-bay 1U system and a nine-bay 2U system at the top end of the Asustor range.
Even if they are new on the market, ASUSTOR has succeeded to deliver some powerful NAS servers. The model that we are reviewing in this article comes with 4 bays, is meant for usage at home and in small business environments and is packing an Intel Atom DS2700 CPU along with 1GB of RAM (user upgradeable to 3GB).
Everybody needs a NAS, I'm convinced. Maybe if I described what the modern NAS has become - a Private Cloud, then everyone would agree. Years ago, when Benchmark Reviews started reviewing NAS servers, they were made to sit on your network as a sort of file server and you used proprietary, vendor supplied backup software. Today, as we all know, everything is wide open. Access anything, anywhere, with any application is not just a dream anymore. Hardware is still important, but the depth and breadth of the software is becoming more of a differentiator. The ASUSTOR AS-604T NAS Network Storage Server uses a familiar hardware platform - Intel Atom and a Linux distro, but the design team didn't stop there. There are some fundamental improvements that were ready to be solved from a slightly different perspective. Join in, as we see how this new 4-bay device compares to its competitors.
Today on our test bench we'll be taking a look at the AS-604T NAS from Asustor. Asustor are a relatively new entrant into the home and small business digital storage business however as a division of the Taiwanese PC giant Asus they certainly have the backing to make a big splash.
So, do Synology and QNAP finally have some fresh competition? We'd like to say yes. With the AS-604T NAS device, Asustor has created an outstanding first entry. The chassis is solid and attractive, the display is practical, and the firmware is very good for such a young company. Ok, here and there you can still notice a few rough edges, but generally speaking Asustor has created a very comprehensive product with lots of features and options. We also get the impression this is just the first we've seen from Asustor.

With most people out in the market looking to find a cost-effective NAS server for home/office use (media playback, downloading and IP surveilance are the three primary reasons most people want them for) we naturally tend to do our best to get entry/mid-end solutions on our test bench mostly. However from time to time we also have to cater to the needs of the more demanding consumers and enterprise users who are after high-end models packing enough punch and features for a variety of heavy uses. ASUSTOR may just be around for roughly 2 years but through their very good products so far they've made it quite clear that they are here to stay so it was just a matter of time before people started to ask from us to test their top NAS Servers. Well we obviously listened and so today we will be taking a very thorough look on their latest 8-bay NAS Server the AS-608T.
