One of the biggest surprises we learned at CES 2011 was that Kingston had joined Team SandForce for the SF-2000 Series of products. After CES we learned from Digitimes that Kingston was also moving to acquire a larger stake of controller manufacturer JMicron at the same time. Kingston has been gaining attention for their solid state drive products for the last two years and slowly gaining market share. The recent maneuvers will allow Kingston to continue building upon their successes and become an even larger player in the global solid state drive market.
Just about two months ago, we have completed a review of Icy Dock MB662USEB-2S; an incredible dual-bay FireWire 400/800 eSATA & USB Raid 3.5" HDD enclosure and today we are going to bring you another existing product from Icy Dock; MB994SP-4S. Icy Dock MB994SP-4S is not an external HDD enclosure but an internal multi-bay HDD RAID cage; able to support up to four 2.5" SATA/SSD/SAS HDDs.
Two years ago at CES we told you about ioSafe and their then new disaster proof external USB 2.0 hard drive that would withstand temperatures up to 1550 Degrees F for up to one half hour. The original Solo was also the first hard drive enclosure that would sustain being fully submerged in water for up to 72 hours. Then, exactly one year ago we tested the ioSafe in our own lab too see what kind of performance we could get out of such a robust system.
While testing may have been necessary to prove the performance claims regarding the Seagate GoFlex Slim 320GB USB 3.0 hard drive, the other key selling point is blatantly obvious with just a casual glance. The GoFlex Slim lives up to its name, as it is ultra-compact in all directions, especially its thickness. At just 9mm thick it is about as thin as some bare 2.5" drives.
At Computex 2011 Cameron was hand delivered a new product from RunCore that we weren't expecting. The new RunCore Pro V Plus builds upon the success of the original Pro V, but changes the script a bit by using new IMFT 25nm flash. Drives with this controller / flash combination made a lot of noise in the tech press a few months ago. To make a long story short, one SSD manufacturer (not RunCore) made changes to their build of materials list and started selling new 25nm drives under the same model name as the older 3xnm drives. The new 25nm offerings are a bit slower than the older models and also have less user accessible capacity.
We have reviewed many OCZ solid state drives in the last year and today we are looking at their latest Octane 512GB model. There is no doubt that OCZ have been at the forefront of SSD development in the last year, focusing almost exclusively on Sandforce based products. For those of you who have been around as long as me however, you may remember that OCZ were the first company to partner up with Indilinx and today they reaffirm that union by including an Indilinx Everest controller in the Octane drive.
The original RevoDrive was essentially a two drive RAID 0 array packed on a convenient PCI Express card and allowed users to indulge in RAID performance without the hassles of building a RAID array. Four SSDs in RAID 0 is kind of like the sweet spot since going over four adds very little to real world performance other than capacity.
The SSD technology of today is worlds better than what we had in 2009. Better understanding of the technology, mature controllers, Windows 7, SATA 6Gb/sec and even the PCI-e bus have all advanced things to a point where SSDs are coming close to mainstream adoption. Pricing is also much more attractive as evident by the drive we are looking at today, OCZ's Agility 3 240GB unit. The Agility 3 is one of three new SATA 6Gb/sec SSDs and is classified as a high-performance drive alongside the higher-end Vertex 3.
