Our SSD analysis today looks at the Micron RealSSD P400e SATA 3 enterprise SSD, a new entry with a new approach to integrating SSDs into the entry-level enterprise tier. The enterprise SSD market is segmenting into several layers that suit very different needs, and this entry level MLC based SSD looks to grab the mainstream customer market. Upper-echelon ultra high performance SSDs can command prices that are very prohibitive for the entry level crowd, and this is the void that the P400e looks to fill.

Western Digital’s My Cloud network-attached storage devices are great for storing your data, but they are single-bay devices that can’t offer capacity benefits or mind assuring redundancy of having a RAID array for your data. Millions of people around the world have relied on single-bay or single-drive devices to backup their data. WD has noticed that there has been a major shift to multi-bay network attached storage (NAS) devices this year and market research shows that trend will continue in the years to come. WD realized that they did not offer any multi-bay NAS devices for the consumer market, so they decided to come up with one. WD’s announcement of the My Cloud EX4 today is the answer to this market shift and hopefully the continued growth of the WD brand.

Have you ever woken up in the morning and wished for a breakfast in bed? I am certain a few of you individuals have experienced this craving, and let me be the first to tell you that the Thermaltake Max 5G is exactly that craving taunter. Now, many of you are probably wondering what I am trying to get at here, so let me clarify -- bacon. Simply put, this hard drive enclosure smells like bacon in my opinion. Thermaltake must have some kind of telekinesis power, because who would make a HDD enclosure that smells like bacon? Let us not get too carried away with the "bacony" goodness of the Max 5G. Many would have expected this "meaty" enclosure to make a lot of noise, considering it incorporates two fans. With two fans, one would at least expect to hear much of the fan noise. However, after turning it on for quite some time, it was actually not too bad. Continuing on with my daily chores, it almost made me think the fans were not even on, but the stylish blue LEDs convinced me otherwise. I am not sure what is with all the blue LED fans that manufactures keep using on almost all the electronics I use, but it is almost getting to the point where my computer is now a glowing blue monster in the middle of the night. Thermaltake sure seems to be messing around my head when it comes to this enclosure. Read on to find out why!

Ever since the emergence of Solid-State Drives, there’s been a conundrum facing laptop users in regards to storage options. Storage could be fast, large capacity, or low price – pick two of the three. We’ve seen hybrid drives that mesh SSDs with HDDs using a caching method to boost performance but generally the SSD portion is less than ideal. Western Digital has a new spin on this concept with a hybrid drive of a different sort that they’ve aptly named Black². With it, they’ve actually combined a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD on a single drive, although separate save for the the SATA III interface they share. Before you go wetting yourself with anticipation, have a look at the performance numbers and our impressions to see if it truly delivers full SSD performance with HDD capacity...

In this review PCSTATS will be testing the 240GB Kingston SSDnow V300 SSD - a 6Gb/s SATA III drive rated by the manufacturer for sequential read speeds up to 450MB/s and write speeds up to 450MB/s.

SSD technology has hit like a hurricane leaving enterprise in awe of its potential yet leery of high cost for a storage medium still in its infancy. Todays business is reluctant to implement SSD storage for reasons that run the gamut from reliability and durability to long-term performance gain concerns. The inherent cost of slc drives is self defeating for a small business and time has yet to put its stamp of approval on mlc design.
