Almost everyone reading this review is likely to have a small USB 2.0 flash drive at home or work. They can be used for transferring files between machines, flashing the BIOS of a motherboard and for offline mirroring of sensitive data. 2012 saw a wealth of fast USB 3.0 drives released to market from companies such as ADATA, Corsair and Kingston. Today we are looking at the new Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator which ships in staggering 512GB and 1TB capacities.

Perhaps one of the hottest tech items to hit in the last year is the ultrabook, a laptop typically measuring under 1/2″ thick, weighing less than 3 lbs, having performance as high as 1GB/s transfer speeds and being capable of up to ten hours battery life. As new and amazing as the ultra is, the consumer also learned of the solid state drive and, more specifically, the mSATA SSD measuring 1/3 the size of a credit card, just over 3mm thick and weighing just under 7gm. As with any other new technology, such things as storage capacity are considered premium and, even now, we are seeing systems sell for as much as $500-$750 more, simply the result of a storage upgrade from 120 to 240GB. The smart consumer is one who buys the lower capacity system with full intent of upgrading the SSD themselves and, in doing so, saves themselves hundreds of dollars.

No matter how much advancement in technology we see through the years one thing continues to stay unaltered and that's the continuously growing storage demands/needs for most enthusiasts and professionals. Personally for backup purposes only i use quite a few Terabytes and i know many others who use even more so i really hope that the 5TB HDD models will get released sooner rather than later (Q1 2013 is the projected date after all). Now as you all know lately we've been focusing most of our efforts into testing all the latest storage related devices to hit the market from internal devices such as SSDs and HDDs up to portable devices including USB flash drives and 3.5"/2.5" external HDDs. Still the market is huge, new models get released almost on a daily basis and so today in our hands we have yet another such device the Armor A15 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" portable hard drive from Silicon Power.

The Thecus Top Tower N8850 is definitely an impressive NAS device, both in terms of design and performance. The firmware perhaps has some rough edges, but it's complete enough. It makes the Thecus Top Tower N8850 an interesting option if you want high performance and don't mind that it makes a little noise. It's great that you can upgrade the N8850 by adding a 10 Gigabit adapter or increasing the amount of RAM.

Our SSD analysis today is another first for us here at TSSDR as we have finally received a Mushkin Atlas 480GB mSATA SSD, the reigning champion in capacity for mSATA drives at this point and time. The interest we have seen in this drive, particularly pertaining to its height, has been somewhat of a shock as several e-mails have been received asking if we thought it would fit in such and such a laptop or ultrabook. To answer two of our e-mails, we installed the Atlas 480GB in our Toshiba Z830, and also, a Samsung Series 9, and had no problem with fit whatsoever. In fact, even we were surprised that there was so little height variation between the two.

The TS-469L is another powerful NAS from QNAP aimed at home and small business users, equipped with a HDMI interface that can be connected to our Full-HD TV. Thanks to its HD Station function and it’s modules, we can transform the server into a fully-featured media center for browsing the web, playing media content with XBMC or even for navigating through the Turbo NAS OS interface, without the need of using a PC. As extra bundle, we can acquire separately the useful QNAP Media Center remote or extra RAM for a total of 3GB.
