Benchmark Reviews has demonstrated a voracious appetite for high-speed storage technologies over the past few years, primarily fueled by our research and testing with Solid State Drive products. In this article Benchmark Reviews Executive Editor Olin Coles submitted several industry-specific questions directly to storage expert David Szabados, the Senior PR Manager responsible for enterprise storage, security, and future emerging storage technologies at Seagate Technology. David took time out of his busy schedule in the middle of the Seagate Barracuda X! T 6Gbps SATA-III HDD product launch to directly answer many of the questions we asked. Benchmark Reviews asked Seagate questions that cover everything from increasing spindle speeds and Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording to offering SSD products, which all help shape this technology interview into an extremely rare opportunity for our readers to learn of upcoming and developmental product plans directly from the manufacturer.

On 21 September 2009 Seagate Technology will be the first and only manufacturer to offer a SATA-III 6Gbps hard drive product with the large 64MB cache buffer as the 2TB Barracuda XT ST32000641AS is unveiled. Both combined improvements to burst rate and sustained bandwidth will mark a substantial improvement to the design of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) storage products, and the new technology is expected to give Solid State Drive (SSD) components some serious competition. The Seagate Barracuda XT series is designed for performance enthusiasts such as gamers, as well as small server systems. Additional enthusiast tools, such as the free Seagate SeaTools software, allow users to custom-define firmware parameters to enable performance features such as 'Short Stroke' and noise reduction. In this preview article, Benchmark Reviews reveals some of the improvements introduced with! the Seagate Barracuda XT 6Gbps SATA-III ST32000641AS hard drive.

Seagate is launching the industry's first 2TB SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB cache hard drive with its Barracuda XT product line. Seagate has tagged the Barracuda XT 2TB SATA 6G hard drive with the phrase: "Speed and capacity, uncompromised." How could anything possibly be compromised with a 6 Gb/s speed, and a huge amount of storage and cache?

Almost exactly one year ago, we've reviewed the QNAP TS-409 network attached storage system. The QNAP TS-409 offered brilliant reliability and stability in our long term tests -- of which lasted an uptime of 221 days, 1 hour, and 54 minutes until connections to Disk 2 overloaded, partially due to a user error! The system also provided excellent performance according to our benchmarks, as well as efficient power usage for a lower power bill, since it's going to be running 24/7. But it wasn't by all means perfect. Hardware wise, it suffered from a relatively slow Marvell 88F5281 500MHz CPU, and only 256MB of DDR2 memory.

What's notable about Seagate's desktop 2TB Barracuda XT hard drive is that it's the worlds first 3.5" hard drive to support SATA-IO's Serial ATA 6Gb/s interface . The Barracuda XT is built around a four platter 7200RPM spindle framework, with ramp loading for the heads and 64MB cache.

Solid State Drives are quickly becoming a popular upgrade in all types of computers. They are completely silent, extremely fast, and consume considerably less power. So why have they not replaced rotational hard drives?

Today I’m looking at the new Agility Series of SSD Drives from OCZ Technology, specifically their 60gb capacity model. The Agility Series is the middle of the road product line, between the budget style and the high performance style, they’re sold as a ‘mainstream drive’, or something for someone who wants good performance but yet wants a lower priced drive than other SSDs out there today. I’ve put the OCZ Agility Series SSD up against a few other drives including another SSD for testing and comparison, so read on to see how it performs.
