We are just months away before the new 5TB mechanical drives make their debut (perhaps sooner) but since price is one of the most decisive factors when choosing a HDD most people still seem to prefer 1TB/2TB models over the larger 3TB/4TB ones. Now as many of you know not only do we always focus to bring reviews of the latest HDD models the industry has to offer but also of the highest capacity variants available. However today we decided to change things a bit and so although we are going to test two brand new HDD models we thought it would be best to test the 1TB variants which should be more appealing to casual users and gamers. So as the title clearly states today on our test bench are the latest 1TB HDD models from Toshiba, the 5700RPM DT01ABA100 and the 7200RPM DT01ACA100.

Alors ?

This report is an analysis of the newly released BIWIN S836 Elite SATA 3 120GB SSD and if you haven’t heard of BIWIN prior to this report, you wouldn’t be the first as we learned of them only a few weeks ago while at CeBIT 2012 in Germany. In fact, we had every intention of introducing BIWIN to North America as the ‘new kid on the block’, at least up until we learned that BIWIN had already shipped over one hundred million (100,000,000) flash storage devices worldwide as of the date of this report.

Patriot releases another SATA 3 SSD into the consumer arena this morning, this going by the name of the Patriot Pyro. The Pyro follows suit with the few other manufacturers that have recognized consumer apprehension over premium SSD prices and have wisely made use of a more value driven asynchronous (Async) NAND flash memory. These new ‘Async’ SSDs include the OCZ Agility, OWC Electra and Corsair Series 3, all of whom have been evaluated here.

In this review we are going to take a look on the performance of the first 2 TB drives from Western Digital that spin at 7,200 rpm, RE4 and Caviar Black.

We’ve seen our share of hard drive docks and even a few from Vantec, but this time they have something a little different. The NexStar HDD Duplicator also does as its name implies, it can duplicate drives on a sector-by-sector basis. The beautiful part is that it can do it independently, without the need of being connected to a host PC. Therefore, no software is needed and it doesn’t really care what data or OS is on the drive. This makes for a very flexible tool which may appeal more to the techie crowd than the average user since not everyone has the need for drive duplication. Read on to see how it works!

Generally speaking when we talk about external hard drives, there is not as much to talk about these days compared to a few years ago when they were all the rage. Flash storage has been getting more and more popular with many users, simply due to the fact that it is more compact, offers faster transfer speeds and more recently they are starting to offer higher capacities. They do have a slight downside however and this is the relative cost. On the lower end of the scale, any flash drive up to around 16GB in capacity is easy to get hold of – almost to the point where people are literally giving them away. When we start to move up the scale to drives that offer 32GB and above, the performance of the drive also starts to go up and in turn so does the cost.
