Todays review will take an indepth look at the new Asus Z68 Extreme 4 motherboard. To say we have gone overboard on this review might just be a bit too accurate. The storage industry is shifting from 3Gb/s devices to the new 6Gb/s specification which has been a boon to manufacturers as new devices are needed to handle the new, faster devices that 6Gb/s enables. The 3Gb/s specification reigned for roughly five years which allowed user speeds up to 300 MB/s. With the advent of “disruptive” technologies like SSD devices, the limits of 3Gb/s have been pushed back faster than expected.

We are starting to get overloaded with these new mainstream drives that use SandForce SF-2281 controllers paired with asynchronous flash. These products are just coming in from every angle and I'm starting to get the feeling they'll outnumber the faster synchronous drives in terms of total SKUs offered in total by the Team SandForce manufacturers. This is good news for the mainstream market looking for good, actually, above average SSD performance, but not so good for those looking for the ultimate performance found with synchronous flash SandForce drives.

The Mushkin Chronos Deluxe is an SSD bred through a company that, like many others, has a framework in the memory field to rely on. Unlike many others though, Mushkin’s lineage starts at the base of The Rocky Mountains and their ‘Welcome Message‘ by Company President, D. George Stathakis, speaks of community values and ideals often lost in the realm of technology. Today’s report examines the Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB 6Gbps SSD. Let’s see if these values can carry through to our final statement.

When we first tested the M4 drive, we found the performance to be decent but it lacked some of the performance of the similarly equipped Intel 510 Series drive. Crucial has released a new firmware update that claims to make significant performance enhancements. Exactly how much improvement will it elicit? Have a look at our test to see the performance now versus then.

If you go shopping this month for a Solid State Drive, then you will be presented with a bewildering array of choices. If we are being honest, most people tend to buy an SSD based around the price and the Pyro may appeal, as it is a cheaper version of the excellent Patriot Wildfire, which we reviewed a few weeks ago.
