Many readers looking at this review today will already have a performance gaming system and others will be contemplating a second system, hooked into a new high definition television for light gaming and media demands. To specifically target this sector AMD are releasing a very low cost Direct X 11 solution – the HD6450. This not only will cover media and light gaming duties, but can actually be used for multiple screen gaming.

There is no doubting that Nvidia’s GTX580 is one of the finest graphics cards money can buy – we use them at KitGuru regularly for gaming and folding@home. However, equally so, AMD followers are proud to say that the HD5970 is still the fastest graphics card on the market.

AMD have recently adjusted their Cape Verde HD7700 series to offer increased performance while reducing the price. The new hardware ‘update’ is set to target the gamer on a budget – priced between £70 and £80. Today we are looking at a handful of the latest cards from AMD partners Sapphire, XFX and HIS.

AMD launch the ‘Pitcairn’ series of graphics cards today, completing their Trinity of new Direct X 11 discrete solutions. In previous months we analysed the ‘Tahiti’ series HD7970 /HD7950 and the ‘Cape Verde’ HD7770 and HD7750, targeting the ultra high and lower end price points respectively. The HD7870 and HD7850 are released to fill out the middle ground, aimed at the enthusiast user who wants plenty of bang for the buck.

Today AMD release the first card in their 7000 series – the high end HD7970, which is built on the latest 28nm manufacturing process. AMD’s HD6970 was a huge success for the company, so the replacement card is certainly going to get a lot of media attention over the coming weeks. AMD claim it has ‘significantly more compute power than the HD6970′ with a brand new revolutionary architecture. With new technologies such as ‘ZeroCore’ power saving, is this the discrete solution to start 2012 with a bang?

In letzter Zeit hat sich in unserem Forum eine bislang unbekannte Filterschwäche bei AMDs Radeon HD 5000 Grafikkarten herauskristallisiert, welche teilweise deutlich sichtbare Auswirkungen auf die Bildqualität hat. Wir haben uns der Sache angenommen und gehen inzwischen davon aus, daß es sich hierbei um keine der früher beliebten Filter-Optimierungen handelt, sondern daß AMDs Sample-Algorithmus beim anisotropen Filter der Radeon HD 5000.
