Now for those of you who were gaming in 2002, you may recall the beloved Geforce Ti series or even owned one. These cards were hugely popular with the community and turned out to be a goldmine for NVidia. As you can see the naming scheme has returned to play upon the reputation those cards attained.

With nVidia's launch of the GTX 570/580 series video cards last November, prices on the 400 models have slowly begun to decline. As Shawn noted in our recent Zotac GTX 480 review, retailers simply can't continue to sell previous generation cards at the same price as the new ones, and most manufacturers are offering rebates and other incentives to move out existing stock. At the same time nVidia quietly added the GTX 460 SE to its lineup, a cheaper version of the original 460, at the expense of some of its performance. With the January release of the GTX 560 Ti, we're seeing even deeper cuts on the 400 series cards, such as this nVidia GeForce GTX 460 from Computer Geeks

Each generation of graphics cards is made up of the kind of GPUs that most people buy, the mid-range and they have the budget ones which quite a lot of others buy. Then you have the monsters, dual chip and single. Today we look at the latter one from HIS, the HD 6970. A giant card with expected impressive performance; though you know this is going to pull a lot of power. Let's see how much.

There is no doubting that Nvidia’s GTX580 is one of the finest graphics cards money can buy – we use them at KitGuru regularly for gaming and folding@home. However, equally so, AMD followers are proud to say that the HD5970 is still the fastest graphics card on the market.

AMD's new Radeon HD 6990 video card reclaims the top spot in their overall GPU product hierarchy. There is no single-GPU card that can compete with two Cayman-class Radeon HD 6870 processors running in tandem. This was also true for the prior generation's king, the HD 5970, and at first glance the 6990 looks like a one-for-one replacement, but is it? Not really; it's better, or I should say it's more better. The PowerColor Radeon HD 6990 takes a slightly different tack, as the full complement of shaders (1536) is always available from each GPU. There is a BIOS switch that unlocks the core clock and the GPU voltage for the more adventurous among us. Normally that kind of enhancement-on-a-switch might seem a bit ho-hum, but with the power of 5.3 billion transistors on board, there are physical limits that must be respected. Heat and power go hand in hand, and some say it's folly to try and pack this much power into a single package. It's better to! have two cooling systems, and two slots, and two sets of PCI-E power connectors to spread the load, they claim. They may be right; we'll just have to test it and see... Follow along with Benchmark Reviews as we put the new PowerColor AX6990 4GBD5-M4D to the test.

NVIDIA found a way to take over 2200 components and get them assembled together on a single PCB to create their new flagship GPU called the GeForce GTX 590. The GTX 590 combines the power of two GF110 GPUs on a single graphics card. With a total of two GF110 GPUs packing 1024 CUDA cores and 3GB of GDDR5 memory you know this video card is going to do well in the benchmarks!

With another HD 6990 4GB arriving, we take the time to have a proper look at the overclocking potential of the model. It was great that we achieved 1GHz on both cores on our Sapphire sample, but considering we had to run the fan at 100% which generated in excess of 90 dB of noise, we understand that it's hardly a feasible option for most people.

Today we shall review two graphics cards from HIS. Only one of those - HIS 6850 Fan 1GB GDDR5 HDMI/2xDVI/DP - is actually made by the company, the other copies the reference design.
