Already so impressed with what the MARS II has to offer, we knew what had to be done. Using GPU Tweak, the overclocking software that replaced ASUS SmartDoctor, it was time to see just what kind of overclocking performance could be had from the new MARS II from ASUS. I'm expecting good things from the card to be honest. For starters, the cooler is just massive on the card and we already know it does a fantastic job of cooling the two GTX 580 cores present. With the help of that cooler, we're hoping that we'll get some good breathing room on the cores.

In 2009 we saw ASUS bring us the first in what would become a line of limited edition graphics card beasts. The MARS sporting the power of two GTX 285 cores brought us excellent performance. 2010 saw ASUS jump on the AMD side of things and release the ARES which sported two HD 5870 cores. A new year and a new card sees ASUS jump back on to the NVIDIA side to release the sexiest looking card we've ever seen; the MARS II.

Over the last few months we've seen MSI do some wonderful things to the GTX 580, releasing the model into its Lightning series and then during Computex re-releasing the GTX 580 in 3GB form also under the Lightning series; but in this case it was the Lightning Xtreme Edition. Someone else has done something with the GTX 580, but I can't really remember who; it's probably got something to do with the fact we haven't seen it.

With the exception of the custom 7990 range of graphics cards that AMD partners have been developing, the most powerful official AMD Radeon graphics card is still the 7970 which competes with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 and utilises a powerful single core Tahiti GPU as well as some out of this world specs but some brands aren't content on leaving it like this and want to put their own spin on things, and we've seen this many times before, mainly from Asus, and today is no different.

Impressive graphics card design, that is something you can trust ASUS with. The latest new member in the Republic of Gamers family is the Matrix HD 7970 Platinum. It's a huge card based on the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition with several unique features for overclockers.

The ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum video card features top-selected GPUs that have been factory overclocked to 1100 MHz! ASUS placed these highly binned chips on a custom designed PCB with 3GB of overclocked GDDR5 Hynix memory and added features like DIGI+ VRM 20-phase power delivery, VGA Hotwire, TweakIt and the Direct CU II GPU cooler. The end result is a video card that is entirely custom that was made for power users around the world!

When it comes to creating a high end graphics card, very few companies can match Asus. Today we are looking at their new Matrix HD7970 Platinum graphics card, which features a hefty metal, dual fan cooler and out of the box overclocked settings. This card uses a 20 phase VRM which takes power from two 8 pin PCIe power connectors. The VRM features a sophisticated load line calibration system with manual LLC factor control which helps counter V-Droop. Is this the ultimate HD7970? Can it take the crown from the class leading Sapphire HD7970 6GB Toxic Edition which we reviewed several months ago?
