The graphics card industry is one of the fastest moving – with Nvidia and AMD battling it out for the performance crown and more importantly, sales. Today we are looking at the brand new Asus GTX 660 TI Direct CU II TOP which features a custom two fan cooling solution and pre-overclocked speeds. How does the new solution fit into the market? Is it worth an upgrade?
AMD's R9 280X was released a couple of weeks ago and for anyone who has followed AMD graphics cards since 2011 the R9 280X is a very familiar card - in effect it is just a HD 7970 rebranded with a reduced price. On launch day we had a review of the R9 280X to bring you and today we've got another R9 280X to look at, this time courtesy of XFX. The XFX R9 280X uses XFX's new Double Dissipation cooling solution with dual 100mm fans but it is also a Black Edition OC card which means the default clock has been raised from 1000MHz on the core to 1100MHz and from 1500/6000MHz to 1650/6600MHz on the memory. The new cooling solution opts for a sleek black aesthetic which contrasts with the sharp silver design of previous Double Dissipation coolers from XFX.
I don't tend to do too much research on these lower end mid-range products. For starters, little information about them leaks because most people aren't all that interested. And secondly, partners tend to contact me about them before launch because they like these budget cards to get their moment in the spot light.

When it was released last December, the Radeon HD 7970 was the fastest single-GPU video card available on the market. However, the GeForce GTX 680, released in April, proved to be faster. To counter the faster GPU from NVIDIA, AMD first dropped the price of the Radeon HD 7970, and now is releasing a second version of the Radeon HD 7970, dubbed "GHz Edition," with higher clock rates. Was the increase of the clock rates enough to take the crown away from the GeForce GTX 680? Let's check it out.
Another week goes by, and Nvidia launch another graphics card, as we've seen recently with the GTX 780 and 770. Today however sees the more wallet friendly GTX 760 which is said on the grapevine to be the last Nvidia GPU launch for 2013, but as we know with rumours, it's just a matter of seeing what the future holds.
When Nvidia launch a card, they sometimes provide reference samples, but for the most part, they rely on their partners to manufacture their own creations and sometimes that may mean us getting a sample with a unique cooling solution or pre-overclocked speeds, or in today's case from KFA2; we get the benefit of both.
It's been a while since we've worked with KFA2, but after discussing through the launch with them, we find the GTX 760 EX OC landing in our offices, offering us a pre-overclocked GPU and a custom cooler design that we originally saw on the GTX 660 when that launched. Based on the overclock speeds that KFA2 have managed to secure on this card, we hold high hopes that we should see performance very close to that of the GTX 770, but of course there is only way to find that out, and that means throwing the card on our test bench and seeing what it can do.
Of course, we have a few other things to take care of first, consisting of taking a look at the packaging on offer, before delving into the design and aesthetics of the card. Once this is out of the way, we will look at how KFA2 have pushed this card beyond stock figures, before jumping into the performance straight out of the box.
Also, wanting to squeeze the very best performance from the card, we will be overclocking it even further than what KFA2 have, and if previous 700 series GK104 counterparts are anything to go by, we should see some really high numbers here today, so lets get straight into it and see what magic treatment KFA2 have given the GTX 760 graphics card.
In the last month AMD’s partners have been unveiling their custom cooled graphics cards and we have already reviewed the latest Dual X HD7970 Overclock Edition from Sapphire and the HD7970 X Edition from VTX3D. Today we are looking at MSI’s flagship R7970 Lightning with custom twin fan cooler and proprietary PCB design.
AMD's new series of graphics cards, the RX 2XX series, is split up into the R9 Enthusiast class and the R7 mainstream class. Both segmentations feature impressive levels of value for money and top end performance at each price point but today we are looking at one of the higher end models. We have with us the Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 280X Vapor-X OC Graphics card in this review but we've also reviewed the AMD R7 260X and AMD R9 270X for today's launch. While this is a Sapphire branded card we are using this as an opportunity to to also look at AMD's Radeon R9 280X as AMD were not able to provide us with a reference design. The reference design of course is identical to Sapphire's model other than the cooler is different and Sapphire have added a mild factory overclock taking the clock speed up from 1GHz to 1.07GHz, and the memory from 6GHz to 6.2GHz.
The Radeon R9 280X card we received from Sapphire and AMD is simply an OEM graphics card so it comes with nothing other than the card which is pictured above. Below you can see a GPU-Z screenshot of the new AMD graphics card which reveals those overclocks I mentioned earlier. A couple of other things to point out are that this card supports Direct X 11.2, OpenGL 4.3 and AMD's new "Mantle" technology.
