In the world of Small Form Factor builds you are always compromising. You either have to give up some performance for a smaller size or give up some size to get the performance you are looking for. Recently though, this trend has been starting to change. My last LAN build was easy to carry around while having (at the time) the second fastest GPU from Nvidia and a high end CPU. Of course because of my GPU I couldn’t go any smaller. Asus has a new GPU that is going to change that. Their new GTX 670 Direct CU Mini is the same length of a MiniITX motherboard. With that size, my LAN rig is going to need a complete rebuild.. To go smaller!

When it comes to AMD video card manufactures there really only a few different names that come to mind. At the top of that list for most people will be Sapphire. Those of you who made it out to LanOC v13 will also remember that Sapphire joined us for our event as well. When they offered to let us take a look at their new R9 series cards, I jumped at the chance. Boy was I surprised to see that they had made some significant changed to their product line, especially the Toxic model that we are going to take a look at today.

When the AMD Radeon HD 7970 was introduced in 2011 it cost $549 and made short work of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 video card. The AMD Radeon HD 7970 used the Tahiti GPU that has 2,048 stream processors built on the TSMC's 28nm process technology with 3GB of GDDR5 memory on a 384-bit bus. If someone would have told us back in 2011 that this video card would be re-branded and still being sold in 2014 we would have laughed, but here we are nearly two years later and that is exactly what happened. The AMD Radeon 200 series will be headed up by the Radeon R9 290X, but that flagship card has not been released just yet. The second fastest card is the AMD Radeon R9 280X and that is the re-branded Radeon HD 7970! Our friends at ASUS, MSI and XFX sent us retail cards for us to take a look at. Each of the cards are running at various clock speeds, so it should give us all a pretty good idea of what we can expect from the AMD R9 280X lineup. Read on to find out!

AMD released the Radeon R9 290X video card at $549 that was able to outperform the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 in the majority of benchmarks that we ran. We tested at 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 5760x1080 resolutions over six game titles and two synthetic benchmarks, but our testing didn't feel complete. Many gamers are starting to wonder about 4K gaming, so we got our hands on the Sharp PN-K321 32" 4K Ultra HD Monitor to bring you some 4K testing. We know that not many people are gaming at 4K and have talked about that before on the site, but we wanted to jump aboard the 4K bandwagon before it becomes popular and the norm. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan is likely the first choice for NVIDIA fans to do some 4K testing. We were going to use that card at first, but other sites have already done that comparison and at over $1,000, it doesn't really match up well on the price front. We opted to go with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780! Read on to see how the GeForce GTX 780 and Radeon R9 290X do when it comes to 4K gaming!

NVIDIA tends to dominate the field when it comes to graphics processing power, leaving AMD scrambling to remain competitive by reducing prices on their products to add value for an aging technology. Recently the AMD Radeon R9 290X was revealed as the brand’s flagship graphics card, virtually occupying future shelf space for around $599 and expected to compete against NVIDIA’s less-expensive GeForce GTX 780 that has been available since May (2013). Not one to allow competition into their high-end territory, NVIDIA pushes back with the introduction of GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Capable of producing the fastest and most efficient graphics power ever available, GeForce GTX 780 Ti offers 25% more processing cores than GTX 780 while leaving room to deliver record-level 336 GB/sec GDDR5 memory bandwidth so to leave no doubt who controls the top-end of discreet graphics.!

The AMD Radeon R9 290X and R9 290 have been getting a ton of attention lately due to a number of reports that the retail cards are performing differently than the press cards that the media sites received. We have been following these stories for the past few weeks and finally decided to look into the situation ourselves.
