With everybody’s attention on the latest AMD Radeon releases, the R9 series, it often makes people forget the previous generation video cards, which are still relevant and frequently drop in price making them a good buy. Such as the R7950 series, released in early 2012. Whew, it has been a long time since we last reviewed a video card. I am not even going to bother linking to our last article on graphics to give you an exact time gap between this review and the last. With the past now behind us, I am very proud to announce we are now back on board with the component essential to all gaming computers -- and we will have many more to come, too. I still remember a few years ago when a midrange video card meant playing most computer games at midrange settings. You might get a shot at maximum settings if you were playing an older game. Own a big monitor? Cough up more cash, or turn down the resolution and detail. But times have changed. Today's midrange performance cards in the $200 range provide surprisingly excellent bang for your buck. AMD's 40nm Northern Islands family of GPUs is the company's second generation DirectX 11 cards, and the 6850 and 6870 -- codenamed 'Barts' -- promise to deliver roughly the same level of performance as the 5850 and 5870, which were the high performance graphics processor units of the previous generation. (Just to clear up the name confusion, the 6800 series replaces the 5700 series; the 6900 series replaces the 5800 series.) With so many variants of 6850s to choose from, manufacturers scramble to differentiate their products from their competitors. The Gigabyte GV-R685OC-1GD Radeon HD 6850 1GB OC is a perfect example. The AMD Bonaire XT GPU was first used on the AMD Radeon HD 7790 video card in March 2013 and then more recently on the AMD Radeon R7 260X video card in October 2013. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2GB is one of the most sold graphics cards today. It has proven to be a great card for those with a 1080p gaming setup as it is relatively affordable and can often be found for around $250. In recent months companies like Gigabyte have begun offering 4GB models of this popular card for an extra $40-50 over the price of the base model with 2GB of memory. Gigabyte currently has the Gigabyte GTX 760 GDDR5-2GB for $259.99 and the Gigabyte GTX760 GDDR5-4GB for $299.99, so they are charging $40 or 15% more to have double the frame buffer. Many gamers are wondering how much memory they need, so when we got the chance to look at the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 4GB we couldn't pass it up. We would finally be able to see if the extra frame buffer was just a marketing gimmick or something useful that was worth the extra money....
Of all the R7 and R9 series cards that were released today, the AMD Radeon R7 260X is the most intriguing for a variety of reasons.
