Today we take a somewhat belated look at the latest AMD flagship, the R9 Fury X. This graphics card has been designed to tackle Nvidia in the high end, specifically their similarly priced GTX980 Ti. The Fury X is the first consumer GPU equipped with Stacked High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) – but the big question needs answered … how does it fare against the latest Nvidia solutions?
Today we look at one of the most exciting graphics cards to hit our labs this year – the new Asus STRIX Gaming GTX 980 Ti featuring the latest Direct CU 3 cooling system. This 3 fan cooling system uses a new patented wing blade fan to provide greater air pressure, and cooling capabilities. The DCIII cooler is equipped with two beefy 10mm direct touch copper heatpipes. Interestingly, the Asus GTX980 Ti Strix solution is built with a total automated production process and incorporates a 14 phase (12+2) Super Alloy Power II power system for maximum reliability. With the highest ‘out of the box’ overclock speeds to grace our labs yet, is this the high end GPU you should be shortlisting for a new system build this summer?
We have reviewed many GTX980 Ti partner cards in recent weeks and today the MSI GTX980 Ti Gaming 6G makes a somewhat belated appearance in our labs. This high end board is actually one of the cheapest flagship, overclocked Ti’s currently available – hitting the £599.99 inc vat point – £30 less than the Gigabyte G1 Gaming and £60 less than the Asus STRIX Gaming Direct CU 3.

Today we take a look at the second Fury card to hit our labs, the Asus Radeon R9 Fury Strix. This card ships with the latest Asus DirectCU III cooler and a very modest overclock, activated directly via ASUS GPU Tweak 2 software. I was impressed with the Sapphire Tri-X R9 Fury when I tested it last week, so we will see today if Asus are able to bat at the same level.
Sapphire is AMD’s larger board partner so as expected that have a pretty nice selection of AMD’s 300 series graphics cards. Sitting at the top of the 300 series is the Radeon R9 390X. This is of course a rebrand of AMD’s previous R9 290X, but with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Also the rebrand has given AMD time to fine-tune the chip and add new features. This card is 100% DirectX 12 compliant and has AMD specific features like FreeSync, Super Virtual Resolution, and Eyefinity. Sapphire’s take on the card brings with it their Tri-X cooling solution that uses Intelligent Fan Control II technology that will turn the fans off when the GPU is not running hot and a massive 10mm heatpipe to keep things cool, 16K hours capacitors to lengthen the lifespan of the card, a dual BIOS, and the card is of course factory overclocked. Let’s jump in and see what this card can do!
