"On paper and in tests, the 9500 GT is half a 9600 GT--there's a lot missing in that last 100. It's got half the shaders (32) half the ROPs ( and half the bandwidth (128-bit). Adding insult to injury, everything is clocked lower; GPU, memory, even the shaders are slower. It's more like two-fifths a 9600."

Today I have to review a Zotac GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 Video Card AMP Edition. Zotac is currently producing dozens and dozens of cards, from the GeForce 5 series through the 200 series. This particular card was chosen for a machine that I’d call a “casual everything” computer. By that, I mean that the machine running it occasionally does some video production, some gaming, some photo editing, and the like. However, it doesn’t do enough that it needs the world’s best card. It’s also not your grandma Betty’s solitaire and email machine.

ATI have been plugging the low-end mainstream market of their 5 series DirectX 11 cards with the launch of several cards: the HD 5450, HD 5570 and HD 5670 are the most recent additions. With Nvidia’s Fermi launch still several weeks away, the GT 240 bolsters the GTX-200 series and hopes to take the fight to ATI’s previous generation star of the graphics world without extra PCI-e power connections – the Radeon HD 4670.

Today we have Zotac's GeForce GT 430 Zone Edition on our test bench and have run it through a selection of real world tests to establish where it sits in the current market. Tests include gaming, 3D Vision, PhysX, CUDA (GPU Computing) and 3D Blu-Ray playback so by the end of this article we will know exactly what NVIDIA's new budget GPU is capable of.

In the midst of all the rebranding and fine-tuning, NVIDIA managed to make again, the most powerful single-GPU video card. Well, they also made the most powerful dual-GPU video card but that’s not what I’m reviewing, is it. I’m reviewing the GTX 285, the die-shrunk, power-boosted bastard of the GTX 280. It’s really, really powerful. There has to be some kind of flaw, right? In some ways, it’s overpriced, but is that even fair? It’s maybe a bit expensive, but only compared to other video cards--for less than $400, I’m sure everyone at NVIDIA thinks they’re just giving these away. Which is sad for them, great for everyone else. This is an exemplary performer on its own, and costs $200 less than the GTX 280 back when it came out. Did I mention how frustratingly powerful it is?
