Even the most hardcore gamers wouldn’t want a component in their system that sounds like the jet engine of a Messerschmitt Me 262, one of the first jet powered fighter aircraft. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is designed to be well balanced for performance, power usage, and noise levels. With the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti adds to the well rounded GTX 700 series of GPUs and utilizes the GK110 for its core.
NVIDIA refuse to sit ideally by and let AMD have all the limelight. They fight back today with the new GTX 780 Ti 3GB that offers quite the punch.
Nvidia’s GTX 780 Ti graphics card popped up unexpectedly by Nvidia’s normal standards of meticulous planning, very much in a similar way to the arrival of the GTX 650 Ti Boost. The GTX 780 Ti was announced around the buzz of AMD’s R9 290X graphics card release, as a direct response, much like the GTX 650 Ti Boost was released at short notice to fend off competition from the HD 7790. The GTX 780 Ti we have here today certainly isn’t a modest GPU by any stretch of the imagination with Nvidia boldly claiming the title of “the fastest GPU in the world”. Let’s be frank though, for a price of $699, compared to the $549 AMD charges for its R9 290X, you’d certainly hope that the GTX 780 Ti was the fastest GPU in the world because you are paying top dollar for it – 27% more by my calculations. Nvidia’s GTX 780 Ti is hoping to encapsulate all the latest cutting edge features and technologies from Nvidia including GPU Boost 2.0, G-Sync support, 4K capability, GeForce experience, the GameWorks program, Nvidia ShadowPlay and much more.
First let’s start off with the raw specifications and straight away we can see the GTX 780 Ti is set to be a stronger performer than the GTX Titan. It features more of everything with the entire GK110 GPU enabled – yes that’s right every single SMX unit on the GK110 die is enabled allowing for the maximum 2880 CUDA cores giving the GTX 780 Ti some crazy performance potential. It also boasts higher clocks than the GTX Titan and so we can expect to see it be a much stronger performer than the GTX Titan, the only reason you’d buy a GTX Titan now is because it is the only consumer grade graphics card that comes with 6GB of VRAM as standard – that said you can pick up 6GB versions of AMD’s HD 7970/ R9 280X (like Sapphire’s Toxic variant) but of course the HD 7970 has nowhere near the power of the GTX Titan or the GTX 780 Ti. Looking back at speculation we saw earlier this year the GTX 780 Ti is essentially the GTX Titan Ultra that everyone was expecting to see.
With AMD’s R9 290 coming in at a price point of $399 Nvidia’s GTX 780 has been put under pressure at its $499 price point since the R9 290 more or less beats it for 100 dollars less. Nvidia was already on the defensive from the release of the R9 290X, forced to drop the price of its GTX 780 down from $649 to $499, but with the release of the R9 290 at a much lower price than expected the GTX 780 is surely due another price cut? Well Gigabyte aren’t hanging around for that to happen and they are instead doing something a bit different by making a GTX 780 “GHz Edition”. Yes you heard that right, a GHz Edition – that notorious AMD phrase which AMD used on the HD 7970 GHz Edition and HD 7870 GHz Edition. Gigabyte’s interpretation of a GTX 780 “GHz Edition” is taking the GTX 780 GPU and overclocking it from the stock 863MHz on the core and 900MHz on the boost, to 1020MHz on the core and 1072MHz on the boost. That’s a whopping 19% overclock compared to a stock GTX 780!

AMD's R9 280X was released a couple of weeks ago and for anyone who has followed AMD graphics cards since 2011 the R9 280X is a very familiar card - in effect it is just a HD 7970 rebranded with a reduced price. On launch day we had a review of the R9 280X to bring you and today we've got another R9 280X to look at, this time courtesy of XFX. The XFX R9 280X uses XFX's new Double Dissipation cooling solution with dual 100mm fans but it is also a Black Edition OC card which means the default clock has been raised from 1000MHz on the core to 1100MHz and from 1500/6000MHz to 1650/6600MHz on the memory. The new cooling solution opts for a sleek black aesthetic which contrasts with the sharp silver design of previous Double Dissipation coolers from XFX.

When it comes to overclocked graphics card with ridiculous speed Sapphire’s Toxic series is one of the most renowned in the “AMD world”. Today we have Sapphire’s Toxic R9 280X which comes with a massive out of the box overclock of 15% – taking it from 1GHz core to 1.15GHz core, on the memory we see a more modest increase of 100MHz (6.67%). The Sapphire Toxic R9 280X features the respected Tri-X triple fan cooler with a huge 10mm heat pipe and a dense aluminium heatsink. From what I’ve heard and read about this graphics card already the main selling point of this GPU is its ability to offer near-GTX 780 levels of performance for a substantially lower price.
Are you a gamer on a budget? Do you own a 22’’ monitor for playing the latest games or even a 24’’ and would not mind sacrificing some detail levels? Then the HIS R7 260X might be for you since it comes with a custom PCB and cooling system which allows raising the GPU/memory frequencies even further in order to gain some extra FPS.
This week AMD launch their new R9 270 graphics card – set to replace the HD7850 at the lower end of the enthusiast gaming market. Thankfully today we haven’t been forced to review a reference AMD solution and instead we can focus on some higher grade partner cards.
