While the GTX 260/280 cards have taken over nVidia's top slots for video card gaming hardware, their 9 series continues to flush out the bulk of their product lineup, and the 9800 GTX+ reigns as top dog among the 9 series family. The WinFast PX9800 GTX+ Leadtek Limited appears to have identical specs to their standard PX9800 GTX+ with the only difference being that of a slightly different cooler face and bundled game selection. Otherwise both match the nVidia reference specification in clock speeds and chip design.

The bottom line all along has been that you're not going to see any improvement in video card performance unless you're hitting a CPU limitation. With how intensive games are these days, hitting a CPU limitation becomes harder and harder - even more so when you start to throw ultra-high resolutions into the mix.

A few weeks ago we looked at the launch of the Radeon 5870 and followed it up with a look at the 5850 and various partner cards last week. The new 5800 series impressed us thanks to its excellent performance and features such as full support for DirectX 11. In fact, it is probably fair to say that in the high end market there is really no competition for the Radeon 5800s right now. In the mainstream segment things were not quite as clear cut though, Nvidia and ATI both provide some value packed products with each having its own selling points.

Today we are looking at two cards, the XFX HD 4890 Black Edition and Zotac’s GTX285 Infinity. Both are each respective manufacturer’s fastest single core offerings and bring several improved features to the table. The XFX Black Edition contains a 1GHz core (150MHz increase over the reference card) while the Zotac GTX285 Infinity is supplied with increased clock speeds and a preinstalled waterblock for unmatched thermal performance.

Over the past day we have taken a look in detail at NVIDIAs new GTX 560 TI. Aspects which have been covered include single card performance, SLI, stereoscopic 3D, Blu-Ray playback, GPU computing and PhysX amongst other things. As always though we like to end our launch coverage with a look in more detail at overclocked performance...

Considering how long it took XSR to get it's first high end graphics card review, it's interesting that they are now one of our most oft-reviewed pieces of hardware. Not to be the exception to the rule is our recently acquired 9800GT from XFX. The smaller brother of the more well known GTX branding, the GT saw excellent sales during the 8 series for it's high end performance, with lower end price tag. Let's see if increasing the initial number by 1 makes much of a difference.

nVidia have recently decided to rename a lot of their 9 series cards with the GT1 series moniker. Fortunately, XFX sent us over a couple before this, so today I'm not testing a GT something or other, it's a 9800 GTX + Black Edition. Let's check it out.
