I was a little noncommittal in recommending the 4670 and I suspect that I’m pretty much in the same boat with regards to the 4650. On the one hand, these are inexpensive cards with impressive performance for the price, but on the other hand, for very little extra, much more capable cards can be had. But let’s say, for example, you had sixty bucks and only wanted to play WoW or the Orange Box. Will this card do it?

Upon speaking to Brian Burke (nVidia’s PR spinner), we was told that it’s not their fault that the Asus/AMD competitor came with that particular CPU, as that is all that is available to the consumer. The W90 used to have the 9600 CPU, but is now deemed obselete which is common knowledge Burke explains. All W90’s now include the 9000 CPU. nVidia’s fault? I think not.

Today I have to review a Zotac GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 Video Card AMP Edition. Zotac is currently producing dozens and dozens of cards, from the GeForce 5 series through the 200 series. This particular card was chosen for a machine that I’d call a “casual everything” computer. By that, I mean that the machine running it occasionally does some video production, some gaming, some photo editing, and the like. However, it doesn’t do enough that it needs the world’s best card. It’s also not your grandma Betty’s solitaire and email machine.

AMD has leap-frogged NVIDIA by launching the DirectX 11 compatible Radeon HD 5870 video card. Armed with 1600 shader cores, the 40nm Cypress GPU claims to push video game frame rates well-beyond what NVIDIA offers from their GeForce GTX 285 counterpart. While the list of DirectX 11 video games has just started to grow, with one of the first being a free Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) named Battle Forge. Perhaps ATI has created the perfect storm for their Radeon HD 5800-series by offering a price-competitive graphics card with several free games included or available. While NVIDIA toils away with CUDA and PhysX, ATI is busy delivering the next generation of hardware for the gaming community to enjoy. In this article, Benchmark Reviews compares the Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 video card, model 21161-00-50R, against a cross-section of modern graphics accelerators.

At the conclusion of our tests we can easily see a progression of how PhysX has been implemented in different games and how those implementations can vary dramatically not only in effects but in required hardware. Some games worked best when more horsepower was available while others actually did better when hardware was clearly dedicated to a certain purpose.

HTPCs and HD content are growing more and more around the GPU industry. ATI and NVIDIA have been working on technologies to playback and enhance this video content for many years. NVIDIA started working on their Purevideo technology and added the Purevideo HD some time ago. ATI on the other hand, has their own AVIVO technology and as it was obvious, they name their latest technology AVIVO HD.
