This review focuses on DUAL GPU performance comparing 2x Radeon 7970 with GTX 580 in SLI... and a little GTX 590 and Radeon 6990 performance thrown in for good measure. So let's see how the 7970 does running CrossFire in games such as Arkham City and Battlefield 3.

AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition Nachdem sich die Radeon HD 7970 der GeForce GTX 680 geschlagen geben musste, hat AMD eine schnellere Version entwickelt: Die Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. Schlägt sie die GTX 680?

With a refined manufacturing process and a tweaked firmware/bios AMD are today launching a revised 7970 known as the GHz Edition, or XT2. We will be comparing that card to an overclocked, custom design GTX 680 and will dispense with the niceties, clocking our i7-3960X CPU at 5.0GHz and firing the resolution up as high as 5760x1080.

What do you do when you have a succesful high-end video card and your main competitor suddenly introduces an ever faster card? You go back to the drawingboard and think of a way to squeeze more performance out of your existing products. That's exactly what AMD did with the Radeon HD 7970, the end result of which is introduced today in the form of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. It's all in the name, this is a Radeon HD 7970 with a 1GHz GPU with turbo mode.

AMD have had great success with their latest 7 series of discrete graphics cards. The HD7970 led the performance charts for some time until Nvidia released their flagship single GPU, the GTX680. AMD are attempting to answer the challenge with the HD7970 ‘GHZ’ Edition, earning the moniker from the enhanced default 1ghz+ core clock speed.

When it was released last December, the Radeon HD 7970 was the fastest single-GPU video card available on the market. However, the GeForce GTX 680, released in April, proved to be faster. To counter the faster GPU from NVIDIA, AMD first dropped the price of the Radeon HD 7970, and now is releasing a second version of the Radeon HD 7970, dubbed "GHz Edition," with higher clock rates. Was the increase of the clock rates enough to take the crown away from the GeForce GTX 680? Let's check it out.
