Today we have the XFX Radeon 5830 XXX Edition on our test bench and it will be put through its paces in a selection of real world gaming, multimedia and GPU computing tasks. As always these will feature DirectX 11 titles such as Alien Vs. Predator but we have also updated our test suite to include a first look at Mafia 2, Lost Planet 2 as well as StarCraft 2 and 3D Blu-Ray.

The XFX Radeon HD 5830 video card features 1120 stream processors, 1GB of GDDR5 memory, a custom GPU cooler and a price tag of under $240. If you are looking to spend under $250 on a DirectX 11 graphics card that fully supports ATI Eyefinity then you'll need to take a look at this one and see how it performs to other video cards like a couple different NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465's for starters.

The new Radeon HD 5830 comes quoted on the USD 260-USD 270 range in the USA, and on this price range it competes directly with GeForce GTX 275, a model that is being phased out right now, leaving solutions based on this graphics processor from AMD virtually the only video card on this specific price range. Let's see how Radeon HD 5830 compares to GeForce GTX 275 and whether or not this model from XFX is a good buy.

The RADEON HD 5830 comes to fill in the gap between the best-buy 5770 and the 5850; it features dual 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors and has about the same performance as the 4890 in DirectX 10 games. The XFX model comes with a custom made heatsink that sports 5 heatpipes, meant to cool the card better than the stock solution.

OK, we're through playing nice with these new ATI 5xxx video cards. The corporate logo for XFX says: "play hard.", so Benchmark reviews is going to take that motto to heart and show what this cards can really do. Almost every single competing card runs at higher than reference clock rates, and they all come that way from the factory. Every single card I compared the HD5770 to, when we reviewed the reference design from ATI, was factory overclocked. That's just the way it is with video cards built on mature GPU technology. Well, every ATI 5xxx card can easily be overclocked using the standard driver package from ATI, Catalyst Control Center, since it includes ATI Overdrive. So let's do it, let's compare apples to apples, and as a bonus, I'll throw in some CrossfireX results, too.

This card is based on the top selling Radeon 5770 that we all know and love, but now features a single slot cooler. This gives the user better overall cooling when using multiple graphics cards in a CrossFire configuration. It has all of the features that the 5xxx series have to offer including full DirectX 11 support, AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (formally ATI Stream Technology) and AMD Eyefinity.
