AMD fans have been waiting on this for a long time, the eagerly awaited Sapphire custom version of AMD’s R9 290X, featuring their cutting edge Tri-X cooling system. Sapphire have not only adopted their impressive three fan cooler, but they have tweaked the core and memory speeds a little, offering higher ‘out of the box’ performance. Is this the fastest, most powerful (single GPU) AMD video card that money can buy?

It offers a super-attractive price point, great looking custom cooler and a factory overclock of 50MHz on the GPU core. The 2GB of memory is kept at the default 1400MHz/5600MHz effective reference clock speed.

Tel un prestidigitateur aguerri, ASUS s’est lancé sans filet dans le défi de proposer des cartes graphiques gamers avec des mensurations résolument contenues. Le but est noble, fournir des cartes performantes à ceux qui aiment avoir une configuration transportable ou qui n’ont pas le droit d’occuper une pièce entière dans leur logement afin de s’adonner à leur passion du Hardware. De plus, lorsqu’on regarde les nombreux boitiers ITX et micro-ATX clairement orientés vers le gaming, on ne peut que constater que les cartes graphiques à gabarit raisonnable ont forcément un avenir. ASUS retente donc l’expérience, avec la GTX 760, après avoir ouvert le bal avec la GTX 670. Les deux cartes étant proches en termes de spécifications, on peut aisément penser que le développement du nouveau modèle en fût plus que simplifié. Le modèle est proposé à 240 €, soit un surcoût de 50 € par rapport à la moins chère des GTX 760. Pour un PCB réduit, une alimentation revue et un refroidissement spécifique, on peut considérer que le surcoût est des plus justifiés.

In November AMD released their reference R9 290 and while we were impressed with the frame rate performance we certainly didn’t find it fun dealing with the noisy, ill performing reference cooler. It has been some time coming, but today we look at the first custom cooled, overclocked card from partner Sapphire. It features their tasty Tri X cooler.
