In the world of computers there are always trade-offs between power, money, and space. ITX boards have stood at the lower end of the spectrum conserving space and money at the price of performance. Jetway introduces a new ITX board that boasts about the "Next-Generation ION" chipset. But is the improvement really there, or is it all just smoke and mirrors? Read on and find out.

Let’s take a look at this forthcoming socket AM3 motherboard from ASRock, featuring five SATA-600 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, three PCI Express x16 slots, and 128 MB on-board video memory.

Today I have for review the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 motherboard, which uses the AMD 880G chipset. An extremely close cousin to the 890GX, the 880G also utilizes the RS880 graphics, with a slightly lower 560MHz core frequency and the same 128Mb DDR3-1333 SidePort memory, giving it an HD4250 rating. Of course the same video features are passed down as well, including CrossFireX support, although the 880G utilizes a 16x/4x slot configuration rather than the 890GX 8x/8x layout. The SB850 Southbridge and NEC 720200F1 chip give the M4A88TD-V the same benefits as the 890GX also, namely SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 support.

It has been quite some time since we last reviewed an AMD enabled motherboard and much to our surprise not much has changed. Granted the processors have gotten more powerful and they overclock better however none of that can be realized if your motherboard cannot unlock all of that potential.

Of course, as more people jumped into the game using Intel’s building blocks, other companies like VIA (who started the form factor the nettop would be built on and built some of the first CPUs and chipsets for it) and NVIDIA wanted a larger piece of the pie. NVIDIA refashioned one of their older IGP flaunting chipsets, the MCP7A and renamed it ION. This move gave them a readymade solution to Intel’s existing (and underpowered) chipset available for the Atom CPU.

Have you ever known someone that just has to tinker with things? You know the guy I am talking about. It is never good enough. There is always one more tweak, hack, or adjustment to be done to get that few extra MHz out of their systems. Well, imagine a room full of the same people. This is what you get when you talk about ASUS’ R&D team. ASUS makes some great boards, but to the R&D team it is still not enough.

Gigabyte is boasting a full featured motherboard in roughly half the size. I find it hard to believe that they included that much in a board this small. Lets take a look at the H55N-USB3 and see if it really is full featured without any compromises.

The GIGABYTE 890FXA-UD5 is GIGABYTE's top tier ATX motherboard in their AMD Line up. Today we are going to put it through its paces and see how well it does with our AMD Phenom II X6 1055T. We are also going to throw it under some water cooling and see how far we can overclock this board! How will it do? Read on to find out!
