ASUS has it tough. No question about it, everyone loves to hate the front runner. It's hard to remember when they weren't one of the top dogs, and in this business, it's as hard to stay on top as it is to get there. For the last several years, like everyone else, they've been paying the bills by selling Intel-based systems. They kept faith with the AMD crowd however, and have consistently offered a full range of products to support the underdog in the CPU race. All that is paying off, now that the new Phenom II AM3 chips have hit the street, and enthusiasts are once again buying AMD CPUs in earnest.

While we've had a number of engineering sample motherboards floating around our test bench in recent weeks the ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard is the first retail motherboard to show up at our door step. The ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard packaging states that it is designed for the new AMD AM3 processor series. It also says that the board uses 100% Japan-made solid capacitors that have a VRM of 57 years at 65C as well as other features like anti-surge protection, DDR3 Memory, Quad CrossFireX, Express Gate, and an 8+2 phase power design. It is clear that this AMD 790FX chipset powered board is loaded with a ton of interesting features, so let's open the box and see what it comes with...

Let's take a look on a mainstream socket AM3 motherboard from ASUS based on AMD790X chipset with SB750 southbridge.

We recently looked at one of Asus’ high end M4A90GTD Pro/USB3 motherboards that impressed us with its extensive feature set and strong performance. The only drawback of this board was the high price which put it out into the ‘deeper wallet’ category. So we were excited when Asus offered us a lower-end board that is a little more wallet friendly while retaining a good feature-set.

We have recently looked at two impressive AMD motherboards from Asus which performed well in our tests and offered great feature sets and build quality. Today we are going to look at the M4A88T-M motherboard which offers a similar feature set to the other two boards we’ve tested but in a micro-ATX form factor.

The AMD 880G Northbridge and SB850 Southbridge are two of the latest bits of chipset silicon designed to bolster AMD's position in the mainstream PC market. They were released about a month apart this Spring, as part of a full line of 800-series chips, and ASUS wasted no time putting them into production. Key items that help make the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 motherboard stand out are native support for SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, and AMD's latest game changer, the Phenom II X6 CPU. With both Core Unlocker and Turbo Unlocker functionality built right into the board, this combination could be the magic ticket to dynamic-clocked, quad core processing on the cheap. Benchmark Reviews is pleased to review one of the latest ASUS motherboards, using the latest entries from AMD's new 800-series chipset.

Today I have for review the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 motherboard, which uses the AMD 880G chipset. An extremely close cousin to the 890GX, the 880G also utilizes the RS880 graphics, with a slightly lower 560MHz core frequency and the same 128Mb DDR3-1333 SidePort memory, giving it an HD4250 rating. Of course the same video features are passed down as well, including CrossFireX support, although the 880G utilizes a 16x/4x slot configuration rather than the 890GX 8x/8x layout. The SB850 Southbridge and NEC 720200F1 chip give the M4A88TD-V the same benefits as the 890GX also, namely SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 support.

AMD is releasing yet another chipset (the 8-Series), starting with the 890GX & SB850. The biggest feature of this combo is the SB850 now supports SATA 6Gb/s! We will also be taking a look at the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard, one of their first models to utilize the new 8-Series chipset.

AMD is releasing today a new chipset with integrated graphics, AMD 890GX. Let's see the performance of this new chipset and explore all features present on one of the most complete motherboards based on this new release, ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, which comes with USB 3.0 and SATA-600 ports.
