The Z77E-ITX board from ASRock can help us build our dream HTPC machine by supplying a ton of USB ports, eSATA, integrated Wi-Fi adapter + external antenna assembly, a good quality Realtek audio CODEC and more. For easy configuration we can either use the modern UEFI interface or fine-tune the performance via AXTU. Of course, ASRock has also added the usual 555 advertised applications like XFast RAM, XFast USB or XFast LAN.

Not all that long ago VIA introduced a new form factor called Mini-ITX. It was a great idea; a small yet powerful board layout that allowed a decent amount of flexibility. Unfortunately VIA did not have the marketing muscle to get wide acceptance and the idea fell into obscurity. It was not until Intel launched the Atom CPU that we saw a return of the Mini-ITX. The form factor pioneered by VIA was ideal for the small Intel CPUs. We started to see products based on the Atom using the Mini-ITX and Mini-DTX form factors.
One of the first manufacturers to demonstrate a board based on Intel's latest chipset is MSI and we have their mainstream and enthusiast orientated Z77A-GD55 on our test bench today. We will take a detailed look at the performance, including multi-GPU 7900 series gaming, USB 3.0, PCIe, SATA 3.0 and overclocking to find out how it compares with the Z68.
Intel and AMD have been on the opposite sides of the CPU world for more than 20 years. Going all the way back to the days of the 2x86 when AMD had a license to make the Intel based CPU, we have seen these two companies play a game of cat and mouse in terms of CPU technology (if not performance).
Today we take a look at two boards which look to offer a value option in the Z87 market while maintaining as many features as possible from high end products.
