MSI has released four motherboard models for the new socket 2011 platform, the X79A-GD45, the X79MA-GD45, the X79A-GD65, and the X79A-GD65 (8D), targeted to the most high-end processor Intel offers for desktops today, the Core i7 "Sandy Bridge-E" models. Let's take a look at the X79A-GD65 (8D), which comes with five PCI Express x16 slots.

Even for us that work daily in the high-tech industry it is hard to keep track of all codenames Intel uses for their chipsets and then trying to remember what commercial name Intel gave to each one of them. For the average user it is really complicated trying to understand exactly what product an article or review posted on an enthusiast-oriented media is talking about, especially when they are using the codename instead of the final product name. In order to help everybody out there (including ourselves), we decided to compile a series of quick cross-reference tables containing all the codenames Intel use for their chipsets and the actual product name. Enjoy.

ASRock has released seven motherboard models for the new socket 2011 platform, heavily betting that this platform will become more mainstream after Intel releases cheaper LGA2011 processors during this year. Let's take a look at the X79 Extreme6/GB, which comes with three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, five SATA-600 ports, six USB 3.0 ports, and a high-end, add-on sound card called "Game Blaster.

The MSI A88X-G45 Gaming is a handsome AMD A88X motherboard that sports a long list of features including triple graphics slots. That explains the ‘Gaming’ part of the name and as you would expect the A88X chipset means this MSI board supports the latest FM2+ range of Kaveri APU.

The Classified SR-X is an overclocking motherboard that doesn't overclock. It's a shame for EVGA, but really the only honest conclusion here is that the Classified SR-X is a pointless motherboard. When we asked, EVGA informed us that it was unknown to them during the development of this board that the Xeons would be completely locked. The manufacturer still hopes that unlocked Xeons will be released at some point in the future, but from Intel's perspective we see no reason for that actually happening. EVGA will likely be waiting in vain.
