It has been a little while since we have had an ASRock P55 board up on the bench. The last one was the when the Lynnfield CPUs launched. At the time it was the P55 Deluxe. This board featured a handy little SATA 3.0 add-in card and was an excellent performer.

The latest mainstream socket 1156 motherboard from ASRock, P55 Extreme4, comes with four SATA-600 and four USB 3.0 ports. Let’s take a look at it.

When Intel launched the Lynnfield CPU and the P55 chipset, it was just as the specifications for SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0 were being finalized. Too much was in the works to change the chipset and to integrate SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0 (not that we can do that yet anyway). This left Intel behind in terms of getting SATA 3.0 to the market. Companies like ASUS, GIGABYTE and MSI were forced to work with Marvell and NEC to bring this to the table. However, in almost all cases you ended up with a pair of SATA 3.0 ports and a pair of USB 3.0 ports. With AMD based boards (at least at the 890 level) you can get up to six SATA 3.0 ports for your HDD enjoyment.

Today we are going to look at their latest board, the P55 Extreme4 which has a very impressive feature list, with particular emphasis being made on the 10 phase voltage regulator circuit (with ferrite chokes), four SATA 6Gbps ports (SATA3) and four USB 3.0 ports. The board also supports SLI/Crossfire and uses solid capacitors with an indepth POST Diagnostics display. Additionally it has some very helpful, automated overclocking options to aid the end user while supporting DDR3 memory up to 2600mhz.
Motherboards
ASRock has redesigned their "old" P55 series to include SATA III and USB 3.0 and this way they made them future proof, at least in terms of connectivity; the performance of the P55 Deluxe3 board is decent and has no problem at all reaching 4GHz with an i5 750 CPU.

Today we're going to review a top motherboard from ASRock. Actually, company's P55 series isn't very long, and even the second top P55 Extreme is more of a decent mid-end product. But P55 Deluxe is definitely a top solution with both rich features (SLI, 3 graphics slots, dual Gigabit LAN, top-class integrated audio, FireWire, USB/eSATA, etc.) and a nice addition to the bundle -- a SATA 3.0 daughterboard.

This N7AD-SLI motherboard from ASRock certainly had potential to be what it was created to be: an affordable enthusiast board that, while not a top dog, would be a great overclocker, and a board that would allow for upgrades like SLI. Performance on this board was decent, but we were left wondering how much better it would have been if we had not had the limitations that we had in setting our DDR timings ...

Let’s take a in-depth look on this low-end socket AM2+ motherboard supporting both DDR2 and DDR3 memories that ASRock will be releasing soon.
