Patriot offers a new kit of RAM for the Intel Z77 platform. We see how the Viper Xtreme series is looking these days.

A little over a year ago we took a look at our first Patriot Viper Xtreme memory kit in their 6GB DDR3-2000 kit. These kits are just awesome! Each module in the kit features 6 grams of copper at its core paired with an extruded aircraft-grade aluminum outer shield, which not only is going to keep the modules cool, but makes for a pretty cool look. Today we are taking a look a the Division 4 kit of the Viper Xtreme Series, which is designed specifically for Intel’s X79 platform and 2nd generation Core™ processors. We are checking out the PXQ316G1866ELQK kit, which is a 16GB kit running at 1866MHz with timings of 9-11-9-27 at 1.65V. Read on as we take these for a ride.

In this review we've tested and reviewed this kit of ram

Today we're checking out a Dual Channel kit from the team at Patriot which falls under the Viper Xtreme series. This is one of my favourite series because the heatsink quality is one of the best on the market, and while we're not 100% sure how useful heatsinks are these days, people don't want to buy RAM without them, and who can blame them? We're all shallow.

Up on the review block today I’ve got another set of DDR3 ram, this time it’s from Patriot and it’s their Viper Xtreme 4gb 1600Mhz kit. I’ve put it up against other 1600Mhz kits and even an 1866 kit as well and it performs very good. The Viper actually outperforms other 1600Mhz kits and comes very close to and even bests the 1866 kit I’ve got. Overall I’m impressed with this ram, it’s some seriously good stuff.

Today we are looking at the latest high performance memory from Patriot – the Viper ‘Black Mamba’. This memory has been designed for the latest Intel DDR3 motherboards and features a new ‘high performance heat shield’ to reduce the temperatures. The new Black Mamba kits will be available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities at speeds between 1,600mhz and 2,133mhz.

In testing the Lynnfield platform, we've have had to stick to fairly moderate memory speeds to ensure uniformity with the other Benchmark Reviews test platforms. Even at these speeds, though, Lynnfield has already proven an excellent performer in terms of memory bandwidth. In this review, we'll push our system even further with the help of a 2000MHz DDR3 kit from Patriot. As part the of the Viper II Sector 5 Series, the PVV34G2000LLKB kit we're testing was designed specifically for the P55 platform and should provide some insight into how Lynnfield handles high performance memory.

As memory standards have changed over the years one thing has remained constant: the confusion that arises when trying to compare different memory speeds and timings. It's been drilled into our heads again and again that faster speed is good, but so are lower timings, and unfortunately those two ends seem to move in opposite directions. The higher the memory goes in frequency, the greater number of cycles spent waiting before reading from or writing to it. Invariably the question always arises, which is better for my system?

Not everyone knows how to build a computer scratch, and many more are completely clueless when it comes to something as simple as upgrading a stick of RAM. So I'm going to give a quick and dirty lesson on how to install new memory on your motherboard.
