We put G.SKILL's Ripjaws V DDR4-3000 16GB dual-channel memory kit for the Intel Z170 platform through the paces to see what it can do.

G.Skill is one of the more prominent market leaders in the RAM department. Offering a zillion of different ram combinations in all sorts of quantities, timings, speeds and even you can pick between different heatspreader colors. With the launch of the SandyBridge-E platform, we received one of the higher end 16Gb quad channel kits, running at 2133Mhz. Timings are the following : CL9-11-10-28. Maybe you are not impressed, but remember this is a quad channel comprising of 4Gb dimms. And best of all the price isn't lethal at all. The X79 ram line is baptized RipjawsZ. The X lineup for the older Sandy Bridges has been renown for being potent overclockers. But most reviewed kits were only 2GB DIMM versions. So being a lot easier to push. Let's have a look if we can get some more juice out of these DIMMS.

Whew, another desktop memory product evaluation. If you have been following our recent articles, you can probably see how big of a challenge it is even for me to write a good introduction for a RAM review. While the opening paragraph for the Patriot Viper Xtreme Division 2 PC3-15000 2x4GB review did not bring about something applicably inspiring by a long shot, let's talk about some facts that came in handy as presented in my Kinsgton HyperX PnP DDR3-1600 2x4GB SODIMM review about a month ago. Recently, my colleague Preston was having a house party, and I was invited over to trash his place. After the party was over, one of the girls did not have her car with her, and since I needed to drive a friend who lives in the same area anyway, I gave her a lift home as well. Upon exiting Preston's neighborhood on the main road, I asked her for directions on how to get to her place -- and much (un)surprisingly, she gave all the wrong instructions; such as telling me to turn left when I was clearly supposed to turn right. Although my friend's claims about how girls are bad at giving directions was quickly disregarded as a stereotype, I presented to the girl some facts about the female brain -- as in, the inferior parietal lobule in the cortex of the brain, responsible for perception of space, time and speed, is significantly smaller in females than males. So while she was not particularly impressed by the facts of life, different people are impressed by different things, right? Well, there are some facts about the G.SKILL Ripjaws-X F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL 2x4GB we are reviewing today that will get people like me impressed. I will agree with the fact that its DDR3-1866 9-10-9-28 specification is not particularly impressive. But what is impressive is the G.SKILL achieved these numbers with only 1.5V. Ahh, facts. Let's waste no time, and keep the rest of them rolling!

Just a quick glance at the calendar on my right, I noticed it was Valentine's Day when I wrote this introductory paragraph for this review. (Before you ask, yes I did write this paragraph a whole month and a half ahead of publication -- I ran into some problems during this review, causing such a massive delay.) How convenient. So allow me make a confession at this point: I love Sandy Bridge. No, it is not a girl named Sandy with last name Bridge. According to my Facebook profile, I don't even know anyone called Sandy. But inside my latest desktop build humming silently next to me sits something that is, according to any computer geek out there, even better than knowing Sandy in real life. And Sandy is very impressive. She is impeccably smart. She is matchless among her peers in every way. The moment you meet her, you know you don't want anyone else. And best of all, she is actually within reasonable reach. Of course, I am talking about none other than Intel's second generation Core processors code named Sandy Bridge, and from our review last week, you can see how it completely blew its predecessor away in posting truly impressive numbers across the board. And all this is before you start overclocking it. But let's not pretend a computer awesome is just because of the processor alone. To complement the latest Intel CPUs, G.SKILL is back in the game again with their latest line of memory products. The Ripjaws-X RAM, optimized for the Sandy Bridge platform, promises to deliver high performance with excellent value like the Lynnfield-optimized Ripjaws DDR3-1600 8GB CL7 set we have reviewed back in October last year. What we have here is one of their top of the heap, seriously fast DDR3-2133 Ripjaws-X F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLD 8GB dual channel kit sitting here at APH Networks right now -- but how well does it perform in our usual battery of benchmarks? We gave it a shot and have all the details for you in our review today.

We have a look at a lot of RAM, but so often we see them sit at one end of the scale or the other. What I mean by that is, we see these really high end kits or these more budget orientated ones. Speaking to G.Skill the other day, we wanted to organise something that was in between them; a kit for people who were happy to spend a bit more than a more budget 1600MHz DDR kit, but didn't want to go too crazy moving to something like 2133MHz DDR.

The G.Skill Ripjaws-X PC3-17000 kit comes with four 4GB sticks carrying a default clock speed of 2133MHz DDR. I'm not all that big on overclocking my main machine, but the ease of P67 RAM overclocking means that changing the XMP Profile to 1 gives me the speeds I need without even touching my CPU speed.
Memory
The F3-17066CL7D-4GBXH is a PC3-17066 kit which translates to 2133MHz DDR. As you may have guessed from the naming, it's a 4GB kit. What makes it really stand out is the timings, though, at these speeds.

Although the company was established in 1989, G.SKILL is still not as familiar a name in the memory market as are Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston, and others. But in the past few years they've built their portfolio of memory (and memory is almost all they do) to encompass a broad selection of price/performance points ensuring that system builders and enthusiasts can find virtually anything they need. Today Benchmark Reviews tests G.SKILL's "mainstream" DDR3-1600 16GB quad-channel memory kit for Intel's X79 platform.
