When we heard about how overclocking wasn't going to work via the BCLK on the P67 chipset, it really made me wonder how companies were going to attack the higher end RAM market. For years we've used a combination of dividers and a high BCLK to achieve high memory speeds; with only dividers available now we wouldn't be able to fine tune as much.

Out of the box the Ballistix BL2KIT25664FN1869 kit offers great performance that should satisfy just about anyone. If this isn’t enough these Ballistix sticks offer a decent overclock while keeping the stock timings. Crucial has also put thermal sensors in these sticks so that you can monitor the temperatures with their Ballistix MOD Utility should you really want to push the limits.

As a general rule of thumb you will see a significant performance increase whenever you can run your memory clock above the default 13.33x multiplier setting and that is what you will get from these modules. While the F3-17000CL9D RipjawsX modules might not have the best timings their overall performance is perfect for gaming and general purpose computing

The G.Skill Ripjaws-X PC3-17000 kit comes with four 4GB sticks carrying a default clock speed of 2133MHz DDR. I'm not all that big on overclocking my main machine, but the ease of P67 RAM overclocking means that changing the XMP Profile to 1 gives me the speeds I need without even touching my CPU speed.

We couldn't go long without taking a look at another product from Kingston, and this time we see something with a difference. As users are scoping out for the fastest components available they have another thing in mind as well. They want the most efficient running components that money can buy, without suffering with performance and of course not spending any extra than originally planned.

You may remember the review we did on the Kingston HyperX X2 Grey Series 4GB 1600MHz memory kit. If you haven't seen it, then we highly suggest that you do so as it won our brand new PLATINUM award. We awarded it as platinum because it really is that good by offering a reasonable speed, slick design, great overclocking potential and most importantly is dirt cheap.

Pulling our VisionTek kit out of the package, we instantly notice that we're not dealing with some cheap heatsink which is always a good start. The heatsink itself is quite tall and like most companies who opt for this tall heatsink, it can cause problems with some large coolers, but most of the time you're able to swing those coolers around or opt for the RAM in slots 2 and 4 which sit a little further from the CPU cooler.

GeIL have been attempting to bring their branding and their name back into the market, with extreme efforts being focussed on in the UK. They have done so with a new range of memory products with the “Corsa” branding of which we’ve already looked at the 2133MHz Evo Corsa 8GB kit a little while ago, but for a lot of consumers, 2133MHz is still overkill.

GeIL have been releasing a lot of new memory kits lately, and so have many other brands on the market, with the majority being quad channel kits, aimed at the newest X79 platform from Intel. Whilst GeIL have done the same, as you may have already read here, they have also been focussing on other platforms too including AM3+ and Z68 in the hope that they can hit the market from all angles.
