Today we are looking at the latest ‘audiophile’ grade Asus Xonar Essence One external soundcard and digital to analogue converter. The Essence series of products have targeted the enthusiast and audiophile user now for some time, using high grade components such as BurrBrown DAC chips. Today we analyse the latest Xonar Essence One from ASUS in a very challenging environment, paired up with a flagship, limited edition Valve/Tube CD player and award winning Audeze LCD2 headphones.
People spend hundreds on their CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, storage and memory, but dedicated sound is soft considered an unnecessary expense. Why pay for a card when your motherboard has a Realtek chipset? ASUS refuses to believe that onboard sound is enough. In our possession is their flagship audiophile audio card, the Essence STX, prepped for rigorous testing here at Benchmark Reviews. They claim "ultra-high fidelity" sound, and a remarkable 124dB signal-to-noise ratio on the front output. Today we will be taking a look at the card in detail to find out if it can live up to some very high expectations.
Small in size and large on features and sound quality, the ASUS Xonar U3 USB sound card is a take anywhere upgrade for notebook and desktop sound alike. The ASUS Xonar U3 uses the UA100 audio chip for stellar sound quality and mates it with a discreet headphone amp for more lifelike music, improved gaming and incredibly versatile multimedia. The U3 boasts better than 100bB S/N, with full range response from 20Hz-20kHz.mThe Xonar U3 features a USB interface to be used easily with almost any notebook or desktop computer, along with powerful and intuitive software. HiFi class audio will satisfy even the most discerning music listener, while Dolby Theater with virtual surround and GX 2.5 bring games and movies to life. Sound can be tweaked through a ten band graphic EQ, along with environmental effects, or the listener can choose pre-programmed one-click effects. There is even Xear Voice with effects for two way communication programs and karaoke functions. The Xonar U3 uses 3.5mm connections for line and mic, and a TOSLINK adapter is included for digital output.

A few years ago, almost three to be exact, I reviewed the Future Sonics Atrio M5 earphones and I found them to be an excellent product. To this day my opinion hasn’t changed of them, I still grab them first even though I’ve got many others to pick from. Future Sonics though isn’t he type of company to leave well enough alone and they just had to go an improve upon on one of the best sounding earphones on the market. Aesthetically they haven’t changed, the internal workings have been improved with a new version of their proprietary drivers that offer a wider range of frequencies and just all around better specs. The set or kit I have today is the special edition that is green, this kit features packaging made from recycled materials and a carrying case made from used rubber inner tubes.

Today we take a look at a brand that is somewhat new to us here at eTeknix. While yes we have heard of Attitude One, we’ve even seen their products at various trade shows and online, but we’ve never had the chance to get hands on with their products and try them for our selves and the Tunguska Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound Headset is hopefully just the first product of their range that we will be taking a look at.
I’ve heard good things about A1 from industry types and general consumers too, this got our attention and it’s great to see a new name in the office. While I can’t say I’m bored with the offerings from the other big names in the industry, it certainly never hurts to have more options available to you, especially from a consumer perspective.
As always, we will be looking for a good level of design, build quality, performance and value from this headset and with a price tag of around £60the Tunguska are certainly set to be competitive and if the performance matches the feature list, then we could in for a real treat here, so let’s get straight to the good stuff and see just what this headset has to offer.
Well it seems that we've enjoyed more PC game titles inside November than the entire 2013 and so as mentioned a few weeks ago we decided to take advantage of that in order to test some of the game peripherals we have here. Now normally it takes us around a week to test a game related peripheral but that applies only when there aren't really many games for us to play and so for example i usually mostly focus on Planetside 2 while the others play Metro Last Light and Fallout 3 along with all its expansions. This month however things are different since not only did i have time to finish Call Of Duty Ghosts, X-Com Enemy Within and Batman Origins but I’m still playing Battlefield 4 and X: Rebirth (until the Alpha of Star Citizen/Squadron 42 by Chris Roberts gets available this is the best alternative) so I’ve actually managed to use quite a few game peripherals. One of those is the latest Tunguska 7.1 Virtual Surround USB Gaming Headset by a rather new company called Attitude One.
