Although smartphones have advanced quite a bit over the past few years and have reached a point where some models are one and the same as a tablet in terms of size there's one peripheral that follows suit in terms of technological advancement, Bluetooth wireless headsets. Of course instead of increasing their size (which would be quite easy actually) scientists around the world do their best to shrink those devices so they are easier to carry and use. However what i really enjoy is the latest trend which has many Bluetooth wireless headsets accompanied by carrying cases that double as portable battery packs providing enough juice for up to 5 full recharge cycles. Now this may sound as a bit overkill to some people (perhaps even useless) but such battery packs make it very simple for you to have a Bluetooth wireless headset in your backpack or in your cars glove compartment at all times without worrying that the battery may die out (once i left the Plantronics Voyager Legend UC in my backpack for 5 weeks and it still was full on battery when i used it). The STONE line of Bluetooth wireless headsets by Jabra dates back to 2009 and it was amongst the very first to feature a portable battery for recharging while on the road. Well 4 years later and after the launch of the quite successful STONE2 roughly 2 years ago Jabra is releasing the STONE3.
How many times have you used Skype (or any video chat program for that matter) to communicate with your friends, distant relatives or immediate family only to find out that you can't really rely on the built-in camera microphone to have a clear conversation with them? Things are even worse when we are talking about laptops since both the built-in microphone and speakers are average at best. The same of course happens quite often with VoIP calls and although most consumers are quite happy with what basic hardware offers at seemingly no extra cost the same does not apply for everyone out there especially people who also use the above for work purposes. Well to cover that segment of the market Jabra recently launched the SPEAK 510 Bluetooth and USB speakerphone so naturally we couldn't just sit back and not get our hands on it.
Although I’ve participated in quite a few online conference calls over the past years I’ve never actually paid much attention to related peripherals. However since as of late some of you have asked for reviews of such devices i started scouting around to see which manufacturers have them in their product lines. The fact however that most of you are not really looking to spend much on such devices gave me a hard time since finding something to fit that description without of course sacrificing quality was not an easy task. Summer is almost upon us people so i expect that it won’t be long now before most of you storm the beaches around the world (like some friends of ours I’m guessing some of you already have) so just like pretty much everyone we know you're probably looking for ways to make your time there more pleasant and carefree. Now there are plenty of things one can bring along while at the beach but there are only two devices which happen to be at the top of the list especially amongst teenagers (not including smartphones obviously). So according to what we hear from friends and family, even from some of you via emails and FB messages the number one gadget people consider bringing along is a portable battery pack (PowerBank) followed very closely by a compact wireless speaker. A couple of our readers even mentioned large Boombox stereo speakers which is somewhat funny since back in the day that was our number one to bring toy when at the beach and why not even a guitar if someone knew how to play (smartphones were in their infancy back then). Times however change and now with the help of smartphones tiny portable speakers have effectively all but replaced the many times larger Boombox stereo speakers and so today we'll be taking a thorough look at the latest Solemate Mini Portable Wireless Speaker by Jabra.
I spend the larger part of last Sunday at a beach roughly 90km away and to my surprise after one hour of me being there i noticed several people (not many but way more than last year or the year before) carrying portable Bluetooth speakers with them which they seemed to put to good use later on (not very loud models but enough to sufficiently cover a small area). Weirdly enough however most of those speakers were not rugged so I’m still having a hard time figuring out why one would risk damaging a speaker just by bringing it to the rather "harsh" conditions of the beach. It seems that lately no matter where i go when I’m out (subway, road, gym) i see quite a few people listening to music with large wired headsets connected to their smartphones so i can't help but to wonder just how comfortable they feel. Personally up to this day i only used wired and wireless stereo earphones/earsets when i wanted to listen to music while on the go without becoming annoying to people around me and i can't say that i ever felt like wanting something more. One of the most time consuming and hard trials of the past 5 years or so has been for me to try and find a Bluetooth wireless headset that can be used while riding on a bike or with the top of my cabrio car down.
