A few months ago I took a look at a product that entered a new line on to the list of different products that I've looked at over time. This is namely AVerMedia's RECentral Live Gamer HD - a PCI Express based hardware encoder that takes the effort out of video capture with a simple plug and play installation and a instant record button that connects via USB.
Following on from this bit of kit that ticked all the boxes for me, AVerMedia's R&D teams have been busy working away, thinking a little outside of the box and this brings us forward to what I've got to look at today.
Whilst the PCI-e based capture card is a great bit of kit, there is one slight downfall (if you was to see it as one) in that if you're capturing footage from say a games console such as the Xbox 360 or PS3, you need to have your PC nearby in order to capture the footage. If you're at a LAN event such as Multiplay's Insomnia series or you're popping round to your mates house for a gaming session, the prospect of having to lumbar an extra system around isn't exactly going to rate well and the thought of having a compact portable alternative is music to the ears for many gamers. Fear not as this is exactly what AVerMedia have done.
Today we are looking at the Kingston Wi-Drive. This portable device can be used to wirelessly transmit and share content with up to three tablets or smartphones simultaneously. Photos, videos and music can be shared with iOS and Android devices. Simply download a free Wi-Drive application, or access directly through a web browser. Until a few months ago, I had quite a large reservation against the principle of powerline technology and up until this point I was hard fought when it came to recommending it. Thankfully though Netgear was able to change all this with the XAVB5201 kit and since then I've been totally converted and I can at last put my trust in the technology.
To move on from the simple principle of wired networking, where else is there to go? well the obvious answer is to eliminate the wires and this then in a way questions why one would want to use a powerline kit. Well in many instances wireless has its downfalls mainly due to signal coverage and speed and this is hence why signal boosters and wireless repeaters are available on the market. Truth be told though, wireless extenders still have their pro's and con's, the main one being loss of speed and increased ping. When I looked at Netgear's WN1000RP, it did great in improving the range of my wireless network, but there was a notable drop in speed at the same time which is something that most repeaters do suffer from in varying degrees.

Smartphones have become a way of life in this day and age and with them, a mountain of accessories to choose from. The market for cell phone stands, however, has always been quite bare in the way of quality offerings with only a few of the more popular phones getting stands specifically designed for them. Thermaltake aims to change that with a single stand capable of supporting any device you may have now or in the future. Today I take a look at the Luxa2 H1 Premium Mobile Holder to see if the quality Thermaltake is known for in their coolers and cases has transferred over into the mobile market.
Intel's NUC, or next unit of computing, platform is a refreshingly new idea. Essentially what Intel have created is an ultra compact PC standard that they want to be the future of computing. Measuring in at just 12 by 11 by 4cm the Intel NUC is an impressive small standardised computer that is capable of more than you might expect. Since low power and small Intel CPUs have come quite a long way since the days of quite mediocre "nettop" Atom systems, such as a couple we reviewed a while ago based on the Atom D525, we have great expectations for the Intel NUC. The Intel NUC joins a rather crowded market place for small form factor systems and faces competition from Zotac's ZBox and Sapphire Edge PCs.
However, the NUC's similarities with its competitors end there because what the NUC platform does is try and carry over that high level of performance we'd expect to see from a desktop PC - or at least it should do better than its Atom based counter parts that other hardware companies are selling. Intel's NUC is going to be available with Celeron, Pentium, Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Also since the NUC is a reference platform, we will see Intel partners able to create their own versions such as the Gigabyte BRIX we saw at Computex.
In any case the Intel NUC is the starting point of a drive towards smaller form factor everyday PCs. Today we have with us Intel's "DCCP847DYE" NUC and that means it is running a rather modest ULV Celeron 847 Dual Core 32nm Sandy Bridge based processor running at 1.1GHz with no hyperthreading and 2MB of L3 Cache.
