The idea of universal remotes is nothing new, as is the idea of interactive smartphones. What has only been done sparingly, and mainly with home theater PC (HTPC) focused consumers in mind, has been the leveraging of your smartphone with your home theater. Griffin has made a name for itself for more general consumer electronics components, but is aiming to step in our world today with the Griffin Beacon remote device, which is aimed at the more general home theater user in place of a traditional universal remote. It’s idea is simple--merge the online capabilities of your iPhone (Android coming soon) with traditional infra-red (IR) devices.

For those of you who don't know me as well as you should, I am very much like our Editor-in-Chief "the chc", in that I have many electronics and other gadgets lying around the house. From the latest Core i7 personal computers, the usual iPod and iPhones, all the way to HDTVs with high performance personal surround sound systems -- I won't pretend that I am not a geek at heart! However, there are one or two things I am missing for my Toshiba Regza LX177 57" LCD HDTV. Although I have a Sony PlayStation 3 for gaming and Blu-ray entertainment, it does not necessarily have enough space to store all the audio and movie files for my personal leisure time -- not to mention the PlayStation 3 isn't a particularly brilliant network streaming device like the QNAP NMP-1000. Micca has come along in an attempt to address this problem at a more affordable price. While the MPLAY-HD digital media player does not stream videos over a network like the Patriot Box Office or aforementioned QNAP NMP-1000, it commands a price tag of only $60 at press time -- and it offers two USB 2.0 ports to which anyone can attach their external storage devices with media files and play them from pretty much any TV. All you really need now is one massive external hard drive (Which can be purchased from the money you have saved from buying a network enabled player) to store those illegally obtained... I mean, movies and audio that you have legitimately purchased from your local media shop and online stores, haha. Meanwhile, we fired one up to see how it works out in real life. Read on to see what we found!

After Computex I stopped by the Silverstone offices in New Taipei City to talk more about the new Raven 4 chassis and their cooling initiative. I was able to get some good photos of the new case at Computex but many people were confused as to how small the case really was.

Computer case lighting started with people taking lights made for cars and putting them in cases. From there we got our own cold cathode lights made for computers and it just went on from there. Back in 2010 we took a look at NZXT’s sleeved LED kit, which was a great way to light the inside of your case. NZXT is back with another lighting solution called the Hue. It combines a LED strip with a 5.25-inch bay device that you can use to control the LED’s. The Hue is set to be one of the most customizable and easy to use lighting systems for your PC! Read on as we check it out!

Addonics Technologies is a company that has been around since 1998 and they have become one of the go to companies for those looking for unique storage products. If you are ever looking for an adapter to make something work, the Addonics product catalog is one of the first places that you should be looking. Addonics Technologies came out with Addonics 2.5-inch Flash Drive conversion kit (model AD25MSD) for mSATA SSDs way back in 2011. The adapter runs around $24.99 plus shipping and allows you transform your mSATA SSD drive into a traditional 2.5″ notebook drive. Why would you want to do this? Read on to find out!

As the cellular phone has continued to improve its feature offerings, so too have companies attempted to find a home for that product within the connected home theater. Over the years we have seen universal remotes, video docking stations and a number of other devices which aim to capitalize on the popularity of those mobile devices. XtremeMac sure is hoping you are one of these and have the InCharge Home BT (Bluetooth) device which aims to connect your iPhone to your stereo via Bluetooth. Sounds simple enough.

The 70-200mm focal length has been one of the most versatile and popular zoom ranges available. First introduced in March of 1995 the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM has been one of the go to lenses for sports, portraiture, and journalism across the world. Canon has four 70-200mm lenses in their lineup, two f/2.8s and f/4s with and without IS. As a portrait photographer I find the f/2.8 aperture is a must have over the f/4 versions to completely isolate your subject and stray from any distractions or environmental flaws. Thus is why I sold my 70-200mm f/4L USM earlier this year and purchased this f/2.8 version. Though it lacks image stabilization and the weather sealing that its newer 70-200mm f/2.8L USM IS II brother has, it is around $1,000 cheaper and lighter, making it a much better bang for your buck.

It’s all to do with the sensor size. When you buy a point-and-shoot camera you are getting either one of a couple different kinds of sensors: CMOS or CCD. The problem with point-and-shoots are the sensors, which tend to be very small compared to a DSLR. That doesn’t mean you can’t take a great photo; it just means the larger the surface area of your sensor the more detail and dynamic range can be stored in an image. Couple that with a good lens and you can obtain truly amazing photos that you could only dream of with a point-and-shoot. The major competitions of DSLRs currently are mirrorless-system cameras. Their small size, quality, and larger sensors are all hot selling points. We would still recommend a DSLR camera for learning purposes, and the Nikon D3200 surely is a great camera to practice with.
