Mit dem RT-AC87U hat ASUS einen wirklich potenten Nachfolger des RT-AC68U entwickelt. Das Vorgängermodell war bereits bei uns in der Redaktion und konnte sich mit einem stimmigen Gesamtpaket unseren Gold-Award ergattern. Mittlerweile preschen viele Hersteller wie Netgear, D-Link oder auch AVM mit immer schnelleren Geräten in den Vordergrund. Doch mit dem RT-AC87U will ASUS die Antwort parat haben und zeigt sich mit einer starken Performance. Welche Features der Bolide mit vier Antennen besitzt und wie er in unseren Messungen abschneidet, wird im nachfolgenden Testbericht klargestellt.

If I was to say the name Asus to a selection of people and ask what they would associate them with, I’d almost guarantee that none of them would say wireless or networking products in any way and this is quite understandable considering the fact that they are one of the biggest names out there on the market for motherboards and graphics card. Believe it or not though, networking has been something that Asus have been working on for a few years now and even though they have already got a wide selection of wireless and wired networking products out there, they are not as well-known about due to the bread and butter nature of their key product ranges.

The ASUS RT-AC66U 802.11ac wireless router builds on the success of the RT-N66U model that Benchmark Reviews also tested recently. ASUS has been busy looking to the future, and the new IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. While it’s not officially approved, it does appear to be stable, and there are products on the market already from all the serious players in wireless networking. While 802.11n was a step forward, and many of us have been appreciative of the additional legroom that the 5GHz band allows, there is still plenty of room for improvement in Wi-Fi performance. The ASUS RT-AC66U looks great sitting on the shelf, better than the majority of routers on offer today, but it’s the higher throughput and expanded signal coverage that’s going to win over most consumers.

If you need outstanding performance on the 802.11n standard and you aren't at all interested in 802.11ac, then we would recommend saving some money and buying the RT-N66U instead of the new RT-AC66U. ASUS has proven that the hardware works, just not always to its full potential. The performance of the RT-AC66U on 802.11n is good, but not quite on the level of the RT-N66U. If you do already want an 802.11ac router and also take advantage of the best performance, then based on our tests the best option is to buy an ASUS RT-AC66U and a Netgear R6300 as bridge.

When you cannot install Ethernet throughout your house there are a few options available, but none tantalize the same way as 802.11AC’s promise of Gigabit-esque bandwidth with ease of wireless installation. The ASUS RT-AC56U Dual-band Gigabit Wireless-AC1200 router is built around a Dual-core Cortex-A9 800MHz CPU and 256MB of DDR3 Memory. The RT-AC56U is a 2x2 solution offering concurrent dual-band connections of 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 867Mbps on the 5GHz band when using the AC wireless standard, for up to 1167Mbps. ASUS bundles many features with the RT-AC56U including the easy to use ASUSWRT interface, AiCloud 2.0, VPN capability, and DDNS built in. ASUS pulled out all the stops for this system. Its imposing look matches the impressive hardware inside. And then there is the special 'speed' button on top of the chassis. Press that, and the case literally starts moving. Sides will open up, fans will appear, blue lights turn red, and all that's missing is that trademark Transformer sound. The computer then also engages a turbo mode. It's a sight to behold.
