I've been hard at work trying to find a positive direction within this industry, primarily because Benchmark Reviews is a desktop hardware-centric media outlet. Considering how notebook computers have been outselling desktop counterparts for over three years already, and that netbooks, tablets, and a myriad of mobile devices have piled onto this effect, it's not easy to remain faithful to a shrinking platform. After learning that Crysis 2 will remain a DirectX 9 video game designed for consoles, the writing is on the wall and the future of this market segment is no longer a mystery. In this Opinion & Editorial installment, I reveal How Video Games Killed Desktop PC Computing.

Yesterday was a tough day. It started like any other day as I woke to the sound of birds chirping on my window sill and the sun creeping in through a crack in the curtains. I headed downstairs and filled my stomach with a good ol' English breakfast then logged on to the PC to continue my review of Total War: Shogun 2. That's where things went wrong. You see, I had stupidly decided that it would be a good idea to attack an ally, pillaging their army and city and taking their land...

Many would say that last year with the release of Yakuza 3 SEGA had a misstep. Having decided to remove much of what makes the series unique, SEGA recorded a backlash almost like no other from gamers and sales dwindled as a result. SEGA got the message that western gamers were not going to put up with a game that was half the original and pay full price, and that lesson has been learned. Yakuza 4 has hardly anything cut for the western release, but does that make it a better game?

Set in 2023, some 3 years after the events of the original Crysis, Crysis 2 moves the action from the remote setting of the Lingshan Islands to New York City with the single player story written by author Richard Morgan. The game then takes us across New York as we attempt to save the city from an alien invasion force while trying to avoid or fight C.E.L.L forces who are a private military company run by the Crynet Corporation.

The folks at EA seem to be milking the Need for Speed series for all it's worth lately. Shift 2: Unleashed is touted as the most realistic racing simulation to date. This title absolutely lives up to that hype, but not without it's quirks. Gentlemen, start your engines...

Last year Electronic Arts took Need for Speed back to its roots with success. Criterion Games, the developer behind Burnout, reinvigorated the series, but the game also had an interesting trailer attached. EA used that game to announce the release of Shift 2. Coming only months after the last Need for Speed game, many would see it as too soon. But more of a worry for EA is that of the gargantuan Gran Turismo 5. So, should you check out Shift 2? Well, yes and no.

Shift was a classic title, I played it for months. For me this is a big deal as I find most racing games about as appealing as putting my hand in a blender. Shift 2 is a great game, which I had a blast reviewing over the last week.

Plants VS. Zombies has been around for a couple of years now. It was game of the year in 2009 and has gone onto be a hit game on a wide range of platforms including iOS, PC, Mac, Nintendo DS and others. It is one of the few games that I have come across, that doesn't seem to have any negative reviews on the App Store, all anyone seems to do is praise it and say how "amazing and fabulous" it is. Let's see if it's really all it's cracked up to be!
