Being a short month, it comes as no surprise that the latest Catalyst version has hit us a little earlier than usual. As always, we'll run it through our normal array of benchmarks and see if outside of what AMD say we're going to see improvements in, there's anything else that shows us some surprises.
I knew this driver was going to come, but I have to admit I was a little worried that for the first time in a few years AMD might just miss it. Of course they didn't, and today we're looking at the latest version of the Catalyst drivers - the 11.3s.
Unless you've been living under a rock, you would know that the release of the Catalyst 11.4s has been anticipated as one of the most significant ones from AMD in many months. We've actually been using the 11.4 driver for months in the form of the HD 6990 Beta and new models that launched after the HD 6990 carried with them slightly modified versions of the 11.4.
This came as a bit of a surprise! AMD decided to release the 11.5 driver set which followed the massive 11.4 in the first half of this month. Normally we see the Catalyst driver come out towards the end of the month; this is more so seen after such a massive release.
Another month has passed, so it seems and that means a lot of things to many people. For me, it's the next chapter in my life as my first daughter is due to be born any day. For others it means the middle of summer is here and for the tech world it means that AMD have released another set of drivers.

Der Catalyst 11.8 „Preview“ konnte uns vor einigen Wochen mehr als nur überzeugen. Nun ist die finale Version mit WHQL-Zertifikat verfügbar und die Überraschung war groß. Sorry for being a bit delayed on this one, but it’s here none the less, and that in our eyes is better than having no driver analysis at all, don’t you agree?
I hate to say it, but since Terry Makedon left the AMD driver team it just hasn't felt the same and if there was any situation that would cause AMD to miss a month it was going to be that and while it's been a while since he left, they work so far ahead that it was going to take time for the cracks to begin to show.
This February the company also had an extra day thanks to the leap year, and they still didn't hit it. While AMD released a "Pre-Certified" version of the driver earlier in the month, which they say is exactly the same; it just doesn't have the Windows logo. The bottom line is they've prided themselves that for some odd 7 years they've offered a WHQL driver every month.
