Windows is without a doubt the most popular operating system out there today. With the release of Windows 7 just around the corner I thought why not compare all three operating systems to each other. I’ve taken all three operating systems and put them through their paces in a rather large series of tests comparing everything from video rendering to CPU and memory performance. I’ve got some rather interesting results for you, not quite what I expected, and I’m sure not what most people expected either. It took me about a day of messing around with Linux's Easy Peasy OS, designed for the EEE netbook, to realize that I wanted anything but Easy Peasy. So I went on a Google search trying to figure out how to get Windows 7 on my netbook without springing for an external optical drive. The answer was obvious; I had to use a flash drive. Now, getting a computer to see a flash drive as a bootable source isn't easy. You basically have to turn your flash drive into a hard drive with boot sectors, an exact replica of the original Windows CD or DVD. It sounds hard, and unless you know what you're doing, it is. It took me hours of searching before I came across a forum that had instructions that worked. That's what I'm sharing with you today.

The Problem: Windows 7 randomly freezes for 30-45 seconds before returning to normal as if nothing has happened, regardless of application and workload. Complicating things is a total lack of error messages, Event Viewer logs, BSOD notices or any signs in Task Manager of an actual crash. In today’s TV market, the choice of resolution is generally between 720p and 1080p with 720p displays offering a lower price. If the display receives a format that is not in its native resolution, the image is scaled to meet the native resolution. There are times when 720p displays are all that is required and this is due to the eye’s ability to resolve each line of resolution from a given distance.
Etwas früher als ursprünglich erwartet hat Microsoft am 16. Februar 2011 das erste Servicepack für Windows 7 veröffentlicht, wobei es für die breite Öffentlichkeit am 22. Februar 2011 erscheint. Um es gleich vorweg zunehmen, das SP1 ist entgegen der landläufigen Meinung keine Komplettdatei der bisher über Windows Update verfügbaren Patches und Hotfixes. Über Windows Update waren bisher 105 Updates erhältlich, das Servicepack verfügt über 796 Updates, es wurden dementsprechend also auch alle verfügbaren optionalen Hotfixes integriert. Insofern ist die Dateigröße von nahezu einem Gigabyte auch keine Überraschung, wobei die mehrsprachige Unterstützung natürlich auch noch zu berücksichtigen ist. Darüber hinaus wurden neue Features wie Dynamic Memory, Remote FX und Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) für jetzige und kommende Prozessoren integriert. Dies hat aber keine Steigerung der Performance zur Folge, zumindest nicht objektiv.
Da stellt sich wie gewohnt natürlich die Frage: wie integriere ich am unkompliziertesten das Servicepack in meine Windows 7 DVD? dieser Frage haben auch wir uns angenommen und stellen euch eine Methode vor, die relativ einfach und ohne größere komplexe Codeoperationen zu bewerkstelligen ist, denn die Integration der Servicepacks unter Windows Vista hat gezeigt, das viele doch erhebliche Probleme damit haben, dieses recht aufwendige Prozedere über WAIK etc. umzusetzen.
Darum haben wir uns kurzfristig für RT Seven Lite entschieden, das unsere Wünsche mit einem recht übersichtlichen Interface unterstützt und kein Informatik Studium voraussetzt. Aber auch diese Variante nötigt euch Zeit ab, mit einigen wenigen Klicks in Lichtgeschwindigkeit ist das Servicepack 1 nicht integrierbar, egal über welches Tool auch immer. Those of you who have been following our MissingRemote Podcast are familiar with the dilemma I have been facing for the last few months--do I dare take the plunge on my one and only Windows Home Server system, based off of an HP MediaSmart EX495, and upgrade to the new and "improved" WHS 2011? After much deliberation and non-stop harassment from, well everyone, I decided it was time. The process was not nearly as bad as I had anticipated but the results are certainly mixed. Obviously this upgrade is not supported by HP given that the EX495 is long since discontinued, but migrating it to WHS 2011 would hopefully be worth the upgrade.
If you’re like me, then you rarely actually shut down your computer. Even though I have fast RAIDed SSDs that can cold-boot Windows in less than 20 seconds, I always have lots of tasks open at once to get my work done. It would be a severe pain to have to re-open all of my Excel spreadsheets, notes, graphic files, and web pages back to the state that I had them the day before, so I usually just put my PC to sleep.
