Antec announced the announces EarthWatts Platinum power supplies back in February and they have quickly become one of the most popular power supplies on the market today. With 450W, 550W and 650W models in its desktop lineup, EarthWatts Platinum ensures that environmentally-conscious corporations and energy-savvy end users alike can take advantage of the benefits of 80 PLUS PLATINUM efficiency. LR takes a look at the Antec EA-650 Platinum today to see how this PSU performs!
Power Supply
With energy efficiency becoming more and more important to consumers it was only a matter of time before 80 Plus Platinum was made available in low-wattage power supplies for relatively affordable price points. Currently we see 80 Plus Platinum reserved for high end power supply units like Enermax's Platimax series and Corsair's AX1200i among others. Yet today we have with us an 80 Plus Platinum rated power supply from Antec in a modest 450W capacity for users who care about energy efficiency and only have a modest system to power. The Antec EarthWatts Platinum 450W power supply we have here today fills exactly that market segment.
The focus of Antec's EarthWatts Platinum series is really quite simple, they want to offer you 80 Plus Platinum rated power supplies that are more affordable because they come in more realistic wattages for "normal" systems. In fact 450W is more than enough power for any high-end system. You could easily run a single high end GPU and high end CPU platform off this power supply, such as an Core i7 3960X with a moderate OC and an Nvidia GTX 780. Of course the typical user of this power supply is more likely to have an LGA 115X platform and less demanding GPU but the point still remains - 450W is enough for most people making this a very accessible and applicable power supply.
Antec's promotion of this product pulls a load of questionable figures out of the air in terms of how much money you could typically save. Realistically the amount of money you can save is going to vary wildly on three factors:
Your unit cost of electricity
How efficient your previous power supply was
How often you use your PC and related to that how much electricity it consumes when you use it
So as we proceed through this review it is worth taking a note that the focus is very much on efficiency, so without any further ado let us get straight on with this review.

The EarthWatts Platinum is the latest power supply series from Antec, and will be available in 450 W, 550 W, and 650 W versions, coming with the 80 Plus Platinum certification. This new series will reach the North American market next month; we were able to get a sample before its official release. Let's see if the 650 W model is a good option.

Antec have been selling power supplies now for as long as I can remember and their sales have been so strong that they claim they have taken the top spot worldwide. They have also announced that their return rate is the lowest in the industry.

Many people that i know often wonder the reason as to why most manufacturers are producing fully modular power supply units lately when its granted that people will be using the 20/24pin power cable either way. Well since this is considered one of the main/top features of such PSU models usually the reason stands out in both the manufacturers websites and the packages so we all know that they main reason they choose to do so is as a "failsafe" (future proof) just in case the power standard changes in the near future from the current 24pin one to something newer and better so instead of getting a new PSU and thus spending twice as much in the long run consumers will just be required to get a new power cable. A few months back with us we had the latest EDGE 550W fully modular PSU by Antec and since we were very satisfied with its performance we just had to take a look at the top of the line 750W model.
