With many people already having purchased one of the latest GTX Titan graphics cards by NVIDIA (it was sold out after all) it really makes sense for us to focus on reviews about powerful and quite expensive 80Plus Platinum certified power supply units that can successfully feed that monster of a card with sufficient, clean and stable power (and we have). However since most people out there seem opt for either an GTX 660 or for one of the Radeon HD 7850 cards instead we also need to cater to their needs and so today we decided to bring you a review of one of the latest PSUs to hit the market, the reasonably priced 550W 80Plus Bronze Certified PowerX by Cougar.

Enermax is a well known manufacturer of high quality Power Supply Units. In this review we take a look at the smaller Enermax TRIATHLOR 700W Power Supply Unit. It has two +12 volt rails, sleeved cables and modular connectors. Let us see how this small beast performs.

Today we are looking at the Fractal Design Tesla R2 1000W, a high output power supply which achieves a very competitive price point in the United Kingdom, around £130 inc vat. While this unit isn’t modular, it does achieve 80 Plus Gold Certification and has a full 3 year warranty. Is it worth the modest outlay?

Overall, the XFX Pro Series 850W Black Edition is not the best performing 850W power supply that we have ever tested, nor the most innovative, or the lowest priced; however, it is outstandingly balanced in every aspect. The overall performance is undeniably excellent, with the PSU easily conforming to the 80Plus Gold certification standards, running silent and maintaining low temperatures, as well as displaying admirable electrical performance. When it comes to quality, the fact that Seasonic is the OEM behind its manufacturing alone should be enough to satisfy even the most demanding of users. The choice of components is excellent, as is the quality of the assembly. XFX covers this unit with a 5 year warranty (parts + labor), which should be enough to quell any concerns...

eTeknix has been absent from the world of power supply reviews for around 18 months. Ever since our Sunmoon ATE SM -268 Load Tester broke we have been left without enough test equipment to do a “proper” power supply review. By proper we mean not simply loading the system with VGA/CPU components and taking motherboard readings with programs like OCCT, neither do we find using a multimeter is accurate enough. Our definition of proper power supply testing at eTeknix has been to use a dedicated power supply load tester. Just a week ago we took a trip to Hamburg in Germany where Enermax kindly allowed us to test a whopping 29 power supplies on their Chroma power supply load tester.
The first of those power supplies we tested for review was the XFX Pro 750W Black Edition fully modular power supply. This power supply from XFX is actually manufactured more or less entirely by Seasonic and is based upon the Seasonic X-750. XFX is actually one of Seasonic’s OEM partners. With 750W of continuous power over a single 12 volt rail the XFX Pro 750W power supply is designed to power the most demanding gaming systems with a single ultra high performance GPU or a pair of mid-high end GPUs.
Furthermore the XFX Pro 750W Black Edition uses a fully modular design meaning it is entirely capable of giving you a clean looking system. What’s more impressive is every cable is fully black while all cables, except the motherboard 24 pin, use “flat” black cables for easier cable management. Furthermore the power supply features a hybrid fan switch that allows you to switch between an “always on” or “hybrid on/off” fan mode. The always on mode means the fan always spins and varies with temperature while the hybrid on/off mode allows the fan to turn off at low loads. The option to choose is indeed a very nice feature.
On top of all that the XFX Pro 750W Black Edition power supply is one of the most aggressively priced power supplies on the market and comes with a 5 year warranty, yet has performance that beats most of its competitors if the Seasonic X-750 is anything to go by. But without any further ado, let us proceed on to this XFX Pro 750W Black Edition power supply review and sea how this product stacks up.
Power Supply
After having reviewed XFX’s Pro 750W Black Edition power supply I have high expectations of this next power supply from XFX. The XFX Pro 650W Core Edition power supply that we have here today is XFX’s attempt at a well priced power supply powerful enough for most high end single and dual GPU gaming systems. The raw design, like with all XFX power supplies is based on a Seasonic OEM design. This particular unit boasts 650W over a single 12 volt rail and is cooled by a 135mm fan.
The XFX Pro 650W Core Edition power supply features 80 Plus Bronze Certification and a non modular cable design. Like with all gaming products XFX have gone for a rugged looking black design. XFX state that this power supply is certified for SLI and CrossFire. Additionally XFX say that this product uses Japanese Capacitors and you need not worry yourself about its quality because XFX are backing it with a huge 5 year warranty.
