Recently we've seen developments in systems using less power whilst pushing out more performance. Especially with Sandy Bridge and AMD's Bulldozer hitting the market in a big way. Due to this, systems are requiring less power and remaining stable as a rock.

However, Antec have changed all this and decided that it is time for a revamp. Their new form factor, christened the CPX, is a lot bigger so as to allow more room for the guts and allow a less restrictive airflow. Electrically, it’s just an ATX power supply but unfortunately the size means that a limited selection of cases can take the unit – unless of course you’re into modding. Antec clearly hope the new form factor catches on and their first model is the CP-850, but is all the hype really justified?

Corsair’s new Gaming Series power supply is a solid contender. For the price, you get a whole lot of power supply. While efficiency isn’t up there with some more expensive units, the GS800W only claimed to be 80Plus. Still, the efficiency numbers are good even under heavy stress.
