It is natural for an enthusiast to be dazzled by monsters such as the Corsair AX1200i and the Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1500W; however, even the majority of the enthusiasts would not actually purchase such a beast. It is (or should be) common knowledge that even a very good gaming system does not demand more than 300W-350W and thus, as power supplies are being designed to optimally perform at about 50% capacity, 550W-600W units are plenty for the vast majority of gamers and common users. It is only with multiple video cards, large raid arrays and other “specialized” designs that power requirements may increase substantially. Recently when we've tested power supplies we regularly received comments about the fact that we test the efficiency of PSUs beginning at 200 watts. That's because the energy consumption of modern desktop PCs with Ivy Bridge or Haswell processors is typically a lot lower. It's a valid point, so we spent a lot of time in retesting many of the PSUs we've reviewed in recent months. This time we tested their efficiency at much lower load levels, of 22.5 watts, 50 watts and 100 watts. The results are definitely worth taking a closer look at.

This is the case today, with our review of the AK 500 power supply from the South Korean 3R System. Let's see if this power supply is a viable option or if it is a piece of Chinese garbage with a South Korean passport.
