Power Supply
What we have on the bench today is a power supply from a company that most of you have probably never heard of. Sentey is a company whose headquarters resides in Florida with an operations center in California and manufacturing in China. The company is also expanding distribution centers in Latin America and is poised to make quite a name for itself. Currently the company offers a wide selection of computer cases, coolers, video cards and power supplies.

The Seasonic Platinum 660W, 760W and 860W are basically perfect power supplies. They have the best low-load efficiency we've ever seen in this segment, the efficiency at higher loads is also good, their ripple is outstanding and the semi-passive design makes them inaudible in most circumstances. Had some of the cables been a little longer there would have been nothing we could complain about.

The last few products we have taken a look at from FSP have been universal power adapters for notebooks so finally we get a chance to take a look at a product in their main product line, power supplies. FSP sure does know a lot about power supplies. They were established in 1993 and currently are the 5th largest power supply vendor in the world. Today we are checking out their Aurum Pro 850W Power Supply. This power supply features an 80PLUS Gold certification, a true single rail and dual transformer design, 135mm PWM cooling fan and a very cool rugged Granite-Touch finish. Is this the power supply for your next build? Read on to find out!

‘Cyonic’ is a company name not many of our readers will recognise. They are a new brand who claim to target the enthusiast audience with competitively priced, high quality power supplies. Today we look at their AU-650x – a fully modular DC to DC converter design featuring premium quality Japanese Electrolytic Capacitors. At £85 inc vat at Scan in the UK – should this new power supply be making a final shortlist?

With energy efficiency becoming more and more important to consumers it was only a matter of time before 80 Plus Platinum was made available in low-wattage power supplies for relatively affordable price points. Currently we see 80 Plus Platinum reserved for high end power supply units like Enermax's Platimax series and Corsair's AX1200i among others. Yet today we have with us an 80 Plus Platinum rated power supply from Antec in a modest 450W capacity for users who care about energy efficiency and only have a modest system to power. The Antec EarthWatts Platinum 450W power supply we have here today fills exactly that market segment.
The focus of Antec's EarthWatts Platinum series is really quite simple, they want to offer you 80 Plus Platinum rated power supplies that are more affordable because they come in more realistic wattages for "normal" systems. In fact 450W is more than enough power for any high-end system. You could easily run a single high end GPU and high end CPU platform off this power supply, such as an Core i7 3960X with a moderate OC and an Nvidia GTX 780. Of course the typical user of this power supply is more likely to have an LGA 115X platform and less demanding GPU but the point still remains - 450W is enough for most people making this a very accessible and applicable power supply.
Antec's promotion of this product pulls a load of questionable figures out of the air in terms of how much money you could typically save. Realistically the amount of money you can save is going to vary wildly on three factors:
Your unit cost of electricity
How efficient your previous power supply was
How often you use your PC and related to that how much electricity it consumes when you use it
So as we proceed through this review it is worth taking a note that the focus is very much on efficiency, so without any further ado let us get straight on with this review.

Recently when we've tested power supplies we regularly received comments about the fact that we test the efficiency of PSUs beginning at 200 watts. That's because the energy consumption of modern desktop PCs with Ivy Bridge or Haswell processors is typically a lot lower. It's a valid point, so we spent a lot of time in retesting many of the PSUs we've reviewed in recent months. This time we tested their efficiency at much lower load levels, of 22.5 watts, 50 watts and 100 watts. The results are definitely worth taking a closer look at.

So

XFX is releasing their PRO series of power supplies, with single +12 V rail, DC-DC secondary design, and 80 Plus Bronze certification. So far three models were released: 650 W, 750 W, and 850 W. We have already tested the 650 W and the 750 W models, and both proved to have terrific cost/benefit ratios. Let's see if the 850 W model follows the same path.
