Can the improved Thunderbolt Plus offer anything more compared to the standard Thunderbolt power supplies? We put it to the test to find out!
Power Supply
Many manufacturers fight to take the very important spot of power supply when it comes to powering your all star rig, many with aspirations far beyond their means. A relativity new company Thortech has decided to invoke the god of thunder in an attempt to blast its way into our hearts with its Thunderbolt Plus line of power supplies. The Thunderbolt Plus 800w hopes to set itself apart from the crowd by coming as modular power supply with a unique addition.

Thortech is one of the latest power supply brands to arrive in the market. Let's see if their 800 W, single-rail, 80 Plus Gold-certified unit that comes with a digital power meter is a good product.

If you are shopping for a new power supply there are certainly no shortage of options this year. For those who have just built a very high end gaming system with three or more graphics cards then today’s review product will be of interest. The Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1200W is a hefty design sporting a single +12V rail which can deliver 100A. It is a semi modular design with 80 Plus Gold Certification.

Very few of our readers are going to be familiar with the Thortech name as it hasn't been around very long at all. A few may recognize the name as showing up while poking around a few of the online stores, but probably didn't give them much of a thought. What most of you will be surprised to know is that Thortech is a subsidiary of GeIL. GeIL announced in 2010 that it would start offering power supplies under the Thortech brand. Since then, the company has offered two lines of power supplies - the Thunderbolt series and Thunderbolt Plus series.

When it comes to PSUs Thortech may not be a brand which comes to mind immediately. In fact to many people they may not come across as a company competing in the high end of the PSU arena but with the release of their 1000w Thunderbolt Plus Thortech are aiming to do exactly that.
Power Supply
Thortech is a power supply brand that belongs to the memory manufacturer, GeIL. So far they have only released units with 80 Plus Gold certification and modular cabling system under two series: Thunderbolt, with 650 W, 850 W, 1,000 W, and 1,200 W versions; and Thunderbolt Plus, with only one model (800 W), which we've already reviewed. The only difference between the two series is the presence of a digital power meter on the Thunderbolt Plus model. Let's see if the Thunderbolt 850 W power supply is a good product.

In my relatively short-lived career as a hardware reviewer I have come across a lot of brand names making (or sometimes rebadging) a lot of different products at numerous price points and market segments. Yet Thortech are a brand that I personally haven't come across before, except briefly in one video which I saw on YouTube that absolutely tore into one of their PSUs - rightly or wrongly is not something I am prepared to comment on as I don't know all the ins and outs. Thortech are actually a division of the brand "GeIL" or Golden Emperor International Limited best known for making RAM modules. They have been in the business of making consumer power supplies for only a short while, just over 2 years as far as I know, and in that time they haven't really managed to gain much traction in the consumer market place. Despite that GeIL has been making industrial power supplies for around 15 years so is certainly no stranger to the world of power supplies - which gives us great hope for the quality of their products. Today we are looking at one of Thortech's largest wattage power supplies - the Thunderbolt 1200W.
If we just sit back and consider this product's credentials then it actually has a lot going for it. Firstly, it provides a large amount of power (1200W) at a very high efficiency level (80 Plus Gold). Secondly, it does this in a relatively compact form factor for a PSU of its wattage, looking more like the size we'd expect to see a 650-850W PSU in. Thirdly it offers up a semi modular design and is reasonably attractive - especially if you like hints of yellow. It is worth noting that this power supplies, while still current and sold, is actually kind-of dated. In fact we received this review sample well over 18 months ago, sadly right before our PSU load tester blew up. Now we are up and running again with PSU reviews we are finally able to test it so without any further ado let us proceed with this review to see if the Thortech Thunderbolt 1200W PSU is any good or not.

The Thunderbolt 1200 is a high end powerfull 80+ gold, semi modular PSU. Only 160mm in length. So it's sounds like a real contender for all the well known high end powerful PSU's. Let's bring on the [M] testbench set-up and compare what the thunder god has to offer.
