Back in January 2009 AMD took a major step forward with their first Phenom II processors. A little over a year later now, the next big evolution has arrived! AMD has brought the first affordable six-core desktop processor to market. Codenamed Thuban, this X6 processor features two additional cores over the existing AMD Phenom II X4 Deneb design.

Today we are looking at the low cost, low power AMD APU – called the A4 3400. In terms of the hierarchy of the Llano APUs this particular chip is closer to the bottom of the pile. That said, while it isn’t aimed at an audience who enjoy playing the latest Direct X 11 games at the highest resolution, it caters to a much broader audience and aims to be a jack-of-all-trades in the APU market. At less than £50 inc vat, is this an ideal foundation for a low cost system?

Intel's processor development follows a regular "tick-tock" cycle. The "tick" is the refinement of an existing architecture; the "tock" is a new architecture. Proceeding at a roughly yearly pace, the "tick-tock" model brought us the 45nm Nehalem architecture processors (the original Core-i3, -i5, and -i7 CPUs) as a "tock", and the subsequent 32nm Westmere processors as the "tick" part of the cycle. Now, Intel introduces their new Sandy Bridge architecture as the latest "tock", and Benchmark Reviews checks out the new Sandy Bridge-based Core i7-2600K. This unlocked, 3.4GHz, Hyper-Threading, quad-core CPU is the top of the Sandy Bridge line, and we'll see how it performs against the best AMD processors and Intel's own as well.

The Intel LGA 2011 socket and Intel X79 Express chipset came to market in November 2011 when Intel first introduced 6-core Sandy Bridge-E processors. This platform has been around for quite some time and early adopters might be itching to update to something a bit newer. Intel today is finally introducing Ivy Bridge-E processors for LGA 2011 platforms, which means that this will be a drop in CPU replacement (after a BIOS flash) on some of the Intel X79 Chipset motherboard that have been sold over the years. Many companies like ASUS will also be doing an 'X79 Refresh' and coming out with a number of boards that have updated components for those looking for something more than just a drop-in processor replacement. Intel will be launching three Ivy Bridge-E processors for the LGA2011 platform. You have the Intel Core i7-4960X at $990, the Intel Core i7-4930K at $555 and the Intel Core i7-4820K at $310. Back in the days, when AMD's Athlon 64 ruled the enthusiast market and single core processors were still the norm, South Korean-based computer cooling manufacturer Zalman manufactured some of the most popular CPU heatsink/fans around. Their signature flower design, in conjunction with a very generous use of copper, demonstrated groundbreaking performance across the board at every review website. When I bought my first -- and to be honest, only -- Zalman cooler from a popular online retailer to go with my Athlon 64 for the purpose of replacing my loud-but-not-so-proud (Literally; no puns intended haha) stock heatsink, I was amazed by how large it was compared to the one that came with my processor. Soon, engineers realized that, by combining elements such as mounting the 120mm fans sideways on tall heatsinks, implementing heatpipe arrays, as well as creative uses of different materials for durability, weight, and performance took CPU cooling performance to entirely new heights. Of which some notable examples include famed heatsinks such as the Scythe Infinity, Noctua NH-U12P, and Thermalright Ultra 120. Stop there for a moment. Just when you thought those heatsinks were large enough, I have something here on hand today that would simply dwarf all of its predecessors. Let's welcome the Noctua NH-D14: A wonderfully, amazingly, comically, and almost ridiculously, large heatsink/fan that is pretty much a combination of two heatsinks into one for the latest and greatest in CPU cooling.
